Yuri Kozukata (不来方夕莉, Kozukata Yuri) is a character from the Fatal Frame series. She is the central protagonist of the fifth game in the series, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.
Origin[]
Yuri is the central protagonist of Maiden of Black Water, the fifth main entry in the Fatal Frame franchise. She's a 19-year-old teenager who survived a car accident that killed her whole family. Because of the accident, she developed a "Sixth Sense." This ability allows her to see ghosts. Throughout the game, she helps the other protagonists in solving strange cases around Mt. Hikami, a notoriously haunted location in the outskirts of Japan. Yuri is led to Mt. Hikami by her sixth sense and travels around the area and back, taking photographs of spirits with her Camera Obscura, a specialized camera that can take photographs of and exorcise ghosts.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, she appears as an Assist Trophy. When summoned, she follows enemy fighters around with her Camera Obscura in the form of a reticle and takes pictures at set intervals. If an opponent is caught in the reticle and isn't in an invincibility state, the flash momentarily stuns the fighters, leaving them vulnerable, and gives them an effect that continues to damage the fighter, even after she disappears. Fighters under the effect have different expressions on their faces, ranging from fear to anger to sadness. Her camera flash also deals shield damage, so it is capable of breaking shields. Independently to if there were any enemies caught in the picture, after the camera takes a photo, the entire screen and all players freeze for a moment, even the player who summoned Yuri.
She also appears as one of the game's collectible Spirits.
Trivia[]
- In the NA and EU versions of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Yuri's bikini costume is replaced with a costume based off of Zero Suit Samus.
- Yuri's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks the first time a character from the horror genre appears in some capacity outside of being a trophy.
- Yuri is the first Assist Trophy from a non-playable universe to hail from a game with a D (17+) rating from the CERO, an M (Mature) rating from the ESRB, and an 18+ rating from PEGI.
- Despite Maiden of Black Water receiving an English dub, Yuri is only voiced in Japanese in Ultimate. This makes her one of three characters to have a known English voice actor yet not be voiced in English in Ultimate, with the others being Takamaru and Cloud Strife. She is also one of the four Assist Trophies to speak Japanese in all versions of Ultimate, the others being Takamaru, Sablé Prince, and Akira, and is the only one of those four to be female and unable to be defeated.
