Yoshi Bomb (aka "Hip Drop" or "Ground Pound") is Yoshi's Down Special Move. He smashes straight downward into the ground when used, and releases a star on either side, stunning enemies.

Overview[]

If used on the ground, Yoshi will jump forward before dropping down. This move is functionally similar to Bowser's Bowser Bomb, hence the name. This move can be canceled by grabbing the ledge while dropping.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Yoshi Bomb has been weakened in terms of knockback, but strengthened in terms of damage. Also, it can hit enemies twice if used on the ground.

Origin[]

The move has become a somewhat standard move in Mario games, originating in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island where Yoshi could use it to pound down stakes, crush crates, and slam through soft dirt. The stars are derived that after he performs the attack, he creates a small starry effect. It is unknown why the move is called "Yoshi Bomb" in the Super Smash Bros. series, despite never being known as such in any other game.

Custom Variations[]

Star Bomb[]

Star Bomb is one of Yoshi's Down Special Moves that can be used via customizations. Yoshi does a ground pound in which the stars are bigger and take a longer range. The move gives less damage.

Strengths

  • Greater range
  • Larger hitboxes

Weaknesses

  • Yoshi himself deals less damage

For players unsatisfied with the range covered by the stars that are produced by the Yoshi Bomb is the Star Bomb, which releases much larger stars that cover a much greater range, giving Yoshi some good spacing between himself and opponents. However, Yoshi deals less damage while dropping downwards.

Crushing Bomb[]

Crushing Bomb is one of Yoshi's Down Special Moves that can be used via customizations. Yoshi does a ground pound that gives more damage and knockback. However, no stars will fly out, meaning the move has less range.

Strengths

  • Yoshi jumps higher into the air
  • Yoshi deals more damage
  • Greater launch

Weaknesses

  • Less range; no stars
  • Yoshi doesn't jump as far forwards

The Crushing Bomb is for Yoshi players that want more power behind their down special. The move deals more damage and knockback but has less range because the stars don't appear when Yoshi impacts the ground. Yoshi jumps higher into the air but won't jump as far forwards, once again leaving the move with a decrease in range.

Trivia[]

  • With the exception of his Final Smash, this is Yoshi's only special move that does not begin with "Egg-".
  • In the original Super Smash Bros., the instruction manual incorrectly states that the move is called, "Bomb." However, in the Characters section of the Data menu, Yoshi's biography states that it's, "Hip Drop."
