You know what I find weird? There is no Lucas in the game. When I say there is no Lucas in the game, I mean there are no signs of Lucas' game (Mother 3) anywhere in the game. And that's weird. What happened?
Let's see what Sakurai did in Brawl to make Lucas feel welcome:
Lucas' moveset was similar, but entirely different to Ness' moveset. Lucas had an entirely different playstyle and utility compared to Ness.
New Stage: New Pork City is a stage FROM LUCAS' GAME and it was the size of HYRULE TEMPLE with its OWN STAGE HAZARD that was a ONE HIT KO. That sort of stage takes FOREVER to make.
TWO BOSSES from LUCAS' GAME one of which was a chase battle, something that no other boss has. How many bosses from Ness' game - zero.
Lucas appears BEFORE Ness in the Subspace Emmissary and Ness gets STONED for the vast duration of the Subspace Emmisary. Also, Lucas is the only character in the Subspace Emmissary to go through character development.
Now let's see what Smash Bros for Wii U/3ds has to offer:
...Nothing. Though if you want to be technical the 3ds theme has a little bit of Porky's theme in it. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
Dude. The new Magicant Stage contains images in the sky from Mother (the first game), Earthbound (the second game) and... nothing from the third game. This was a PERFECT place to put a Mother 3 reference in. ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT SOMEONE IN THE TEAM DECIDED THAT THIS STAGE WILL HAS NO REFERENCES AND NOTHING TO OFFER FROM MOTHER 3? I'm disgusted. (in case you don't know, in the Magicant stage, there is every now and then a rip in the sky which will show various iconic scenes from Mother and Earthbound)
SO this makes NO SENSE. Sakurai goes through ALL THIS TROUBLE to differentiate Lucas from Ness and then when Smash Bros for Wii U and 3ds came out, he thought, "Scroo dat" and threw Lucas out the window. I mean, Mewtwo and Pichu got trophies, Young Link and Wolf got palette swaps, Dr. Mario and Roy got songs and Ice Climbers got a Polar Bear when they were cut from the Roster, at the VERY LEAST do SOMETHING for Lucas but NOOOOOOO.
I am actually surprised that people thought, "Hey. Maybe they could squash some of Lucas' moveset into Ness'" Well that sounds WRONG. Ness does not need a revamped moveset just to fill up the hole Lucas left behind.
Also, Pokemon Trainer and Snake go in this category too but they did not get as much representation than Lucas.
