Guys i need advice

I recently got SSB 3DS, and i really just cannot beat other people in online. I commonly see Shulk being used, and i started using Sonic. Back when i was using G&W, i only won a few games. Now with sonic, im average. But i still am trying to become a good player. Does anyone have any advice on becoming a good player?
