So we all know that the release of the 3DS keeps coming closer. We have to wait 3.5 months but still, it is coming close. But that will also mean that on October 3 all the characters will be revealed (or 4, depends on how long it takes for people to unlock characters).
But how many characters will there be in the game? Let's take a look at previous games. Super Smash Bros. 64 had 12 newcomers (although it was the first game in the series). Melee had 14 newcomers, 2 more than 64 and Brawl had 16 newcomers (counting the Pkmn Trainer as 1), 2 more than Melee. So wouldn't it make sense for SSB4 to have 18 newcomers? I think that it is a reasonable theory.
Okay let's move on to cut characters. Obviously Melee didn't have any cuts. However Brawl did. Five characters didn't make it in, although one of them (Mewtwo) was planned. So what if 5 characters were cut again from Brawl.
The only characters left from Brawl are: Meta Knight, Wario, R.O.B., Lucas, Wolf and Solid Snake. Two characters are already cut Squirtle and Ivysaur (the reason why I count them now is because Charizard took Pkmn Trainers spot). And I believe that Meta Knight and Wario are returning as they have unique playstyles. Snake is a definite cut. However ROB, Lucas and Wolf are hard to say.
But think about this. If Mewtwo returns then I would say there were only four cuts. Meaning only four characters have to be cut. Squirtle, Ivysaur, Snake and my last choice would be Wolf as he is a semi-clone of both Fox and Falco. Meaning ROB and Lucas will return too, as Lucas can be made unique very easily.
Okay now I have said that I can predict the total amount of characters in this version.
12 from 64, 14-4=10 from Melee, 16-4=14 from Brawl and 18 newcomers in SSB4. That would bring us to a total of 54 characters of which currently 33 are already announced.
