Super Smash Bros.

I've been a fan of the series since November of 1999, when I bought Super Smash Bros. from the PX. The general incentive of bringing characters from different games to fight each other is really what draws me into the series. In Super Smash Bros., I used Mario primarily until I unlocked Luigi and Ness, characters I began using after making them available choices. In Melee, I again used Mario until I achieved the hidden characters Dr. Mario, Falco, and Mewtwo; these were my main characters used for all occasions. In Brawl, I use Mario, Squirtle, Charizard, and R.O.B..

Reasons behind character preference

Aside from compatibility in general, I used characters because of two other factors: 1) appeal, and 2) game experience; with the exception of Ness and R.O.B., characters I use are from games I enjoy playing and series that I am familiar with.

Super Smash Bros.

I chose Mario as a default character mainly due to his impact on my video-gamehood. His series' games were some of the first I've ever played. Before Super Smash Bros., I frequently played Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64. In 2000, I began using Luigi after he was unlocked, since I had picked Luigi in Mario Party 2 most of the time. Ness is a different story; his moveset and appearance both fascinate me, but, as said before, I've never played a game from the Earthbound or Mother series.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

I again chose Mario as a default character to use primarily until I unlocked characters compatible with my scheme of movement (something I did notice; I would usually only use characters that had to be unlocked, and was almost always critical of what was available by default (the same would apply to other games as well, from racing to fighting)). Dr. Mario was the first character I unlocked after beating Adventure Mode. I began using him instead of Mario because of his interesting range of available palette swaps. Other factors led to my decision, like Dr. Mario's use of attacks imbued with electricity and his wider range of KOing moves. Before Melee, I played Dr. Mario 64 to pass time, and became quite skilled with puzzle games in general. In that game, Dr. Mario was my character of choice in Story Mode, but in Multiplayer Mode, I used Helio. In 2002, I played, for the first time ever, Star Fox 64 at a relative's home. The character Falco's quotes from the game instantly made me a fanatic. Soon after, I unlocked Falco in Melee and to my pleasure, I was able to master some of his greatest abilities. Falco became my "last resort" character; characters I use when I lose with all others. I later unlocked Mewtwo and was of course fascinated with his mystic, yet slow moveset. I found wavedashing to be easiest with this character as well.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

After viewing Brawl's E3 trailer, I convinced myself that I would main Meta Knight (a character I enjoyed using in Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland's Meta Knightmare mode) and/or Wario (a character I had wanted in a Super Smash Bros. game since I played Wario Land 3 back in 2000). Be that as it may, I was disappointed with the lack of characters seen in the trailer (I expected more), and I feared that characters such as Falco or Luigi would not return, and began convincing myself that Melee would always be the better game. I even started making plans to use M.U.G.E.N to create my own fighting game in order to accommodate my lust for a wider range of available characters, but I would never implement them, especially after discovering that a license is required to make such a game. Shortly after, I discovered the Smash Bros. DOJO!! and regularly visited that site for updates on Brawl's features. While I was disappointed with the two delays, the information on characters, stages, items, and over all, special moves and final smashes kept me checking in. I bought Brawl two days after its release in North America and was satisfied with its features. I decided for a third time that Mario would be my character of choice, along with Squirtle and Charizard (choices from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen); I didn't bother learning how to use Meta Knight because his moveset was bland, and I didn't pick up Wario due to my general inability to properly use him. I quickly completed the Subspace Emissary and unlocked every character. I began using R.O.B. as one of my primary characters because his moveset impressed me and I used R.O.B.'s standard kart in Mario Kart DS.
