This article is about Peach's Neutral Special Move. For information about the character, see Toad.

Toad (キノピオガード, Toad Guard) is Peach's Standard Special Move. Peach pulls Toad out of hammerspace, and holds him out in front of her. Toad can be used as a shield that cancels (but not reflects) projectiles, or a multi-hit attack.

Overview

Upon being hit, Toad will emit a shower of spores to do damage. Unlike Marth or Ike's Counter which does more damage when damaged while using counter move, Peach's Toad move does the same damage (18%) and knockback no matter how much damage or knockback the attack would have dealt to Peach. Toad's Brawl incarnation has much more knockback and range with his counter-attack, and now has true KO potential.

The move can be bit difficult to use, as there is quite a bit of delay before Peach can block attacks, especially compared to other counter/reflecting moves like Fox's Reflector or Marth's Counter.

Custom Variations

Sleepy Toad

Sleepy Toad is one of Peach's Standard Special Moves that can be used via customizations. Peach pulls a Toad that, if it counters successfully, will send opponents on the ground to sleep. It will launch opponents if they are in the air.

Strengths:

  • High launch when countering an airborne opponent
  • Countered opponents put to sleep, can set up for punishes and combos

Weaknesses:

  • Less damage
  • Loss of reliable kill move
  • Smaller counter window

The Sleepy Toad, as the name implies, will put an opponent to sleep when an attack is countered. The sleeping opponent still takes damage from the counter, albeit severely less so than the default Toad move. The sleeping opponent will be open to all kinds of attacks, allowing Peach to set up a combo on them or hit them with a smash attack to finish them off. The counter-attack can be harder to pull off because the counter window is smaller, and the move cannot kill like the regular Toad can. Opponents in the air will be launched away when the counterattack is launched, which can be effective for getting an opponent off-stage or launching a recovering opponent out of range of the edge.

Grumpy Toad

Grumpy Toad is one of Peach's Standard Special Moves that can be used via customizations. Peach pulls a Toad that does not work as a counter move, but immediately releases spores as soon as it is brought out, but with decreased damage.

Strengths:

  • Comes out slightly faster
  • Combo finisher

Weaknesses:

  • Less damage
  • Loss of a counter move

Grumpy Toad works as an instantaneous attack instead of a counterattack, trading out more offense for less defense. The Grumpy Toad comes out faster than the regular Toad and attacks right away, which can make it useful as a combo finisher by using it during a combo string to launch an opponent away. Since it does not counter-attack, Peach cannot escape enemy combos as easily and the Grumpy Toad deals less damage than the Toad move as well.

Origin

The move is unique to the Super Smash Bros. series, but the Toads are Peach's loyal servants in the Mario series, as well as the Mushroom Kingdom's dominant species.

Trivia

  • Early screenshots of the move led some people to believe that Toad would be playable, sparking rumors.
  • Giant Melee, Mega Brawl, and Super Mushrooms both affect Toad's size, though Metal Boxes don't affect his coloring, due to the fact that Toad is a separate model from Peach.
