Super Mario Maker is a downloadable stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U based on the game of the same name. It was released September 30, 2015, and costs $2.49 for one version and $3.49 for both versions. This stage returns as a starter stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Design

Characters start in pink droppable platforms while blocks are placed randomly by a hand before the match starts, making multiple hazards or sometimes none of them. It will also fix blocks that were broken by characters during gameplay.

It includes various elements from Super Mario Maker, like platforms, breakable blocks, conveyor belts, lava pits, moving platforms, and pipes. The layout of the stage is randomly determined beforehand, meaning the characters can interact with objects the hand has not made yet. Some features are included that are not present in Super Mario Maker, such as slopes and lava in a non-castle setting. The stage cycles through the 4 themes in Super Mario Maker, which is Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.

Just like in Mushroomy Kingdom, the ? mark boxes will release items when a fighter jumps below them. Items from the Mario universe are more common.

Origin

This stage comes from the game of the same name, Super Mario Maker. In Super Mario Maker players can make any Mario level they want using items, enemies, blocks, and backgrounds from: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. The Super Mario Maker stage is made up of the blocks, pipes, and platforms usable in Super Mario Maker. The stage switches between the four styles in Super Mario Maker and uses the Ground/Overworld background of the current style. The hand (cat's paw, or even Mario's hand) that places things in Super Mario Maker also appears in the stage to replace the breakable blocks if they are broken.
