Super Mario Maker is a downloadable stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as well as a default stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is based on the game of the same name. For Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the Super Mario Maker stage was released on September 30, 2015, and it could be purchase for $2.49 in one version or for $3.49 in both versions.
Design[]
The stage is randomly generated similarly to Tortimer Island. Although the stage retains a consistent layout afterward, it switches between the different game themes present in Super Mario Maker during gameplay: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. At the start of the match, players start off on the starting blocks, while the hand (shown on the television screen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U) places elements to set the layout of the stage. The hand is sometimes a cat's paw or Mario's hand instead.
Many objects from Super Mario Maker, including ? Blocks, Brick Blocks and Warp Pipes, serve as platforms in the stage, and the stage itself appears to take place in the Ground setting. Hazards such as Lifts, Ice Blocks, Donut Blocks, and lava can also be placed, and function identically to their Mario counterparts (with the exception of lava, which instead deals fiery damage and knockback). If any Brick Blocks are broken during a match, the hand appears to replace the blocks. Enemies such as Bullet Bills, a Lakitu and a Koopa Troopa and Hammer Bro on Lakitu Clouds, and a Goomba in a Koopa Clown Car fly by in the background at random points.
Similarly to Dream Land in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, if the "Style Switch: Ground Theme" song choice is selected, the music changes to reflect the current style of the stage. For example, if the stage is currently in the Super Mario World style, the Ground Theme from that game plays.
The Omega form takes place on a flat platform with no other course elements and a slanted edge before the ledge. While the stage still changes game themes over time, the stage itself retains the same layout.
Just like in Mushroomy Kingdom, the ? Blocks release items when a fighter jumps below them, usually items from the Mario games.
Origin[]
The stage is the namesake of the Wii U game Super Mario Maker, where players can design any Mario level using items, enemies, blocks, and backgrounds from one of four game styles: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, or New Super Mario Bros. U. The Super Mario Maker stage is made up of the blocks, pipes, and platforms usable in Super Mario Maker, and it switches between the same four styles from said game and uses the Ground/Overworld background of the current style.
The role of starting blocks is to appear under Mario when he is positioned above a hazard in Course Maker before testing a level.
While the stage is heavily based on Super Mario Maker, it features some elements that cannot be recreated in the original game, such as the ability to include sloped surfaces (though this would go on to be incorporated into Super Mario Maker 2), lava to a Ground setting, and lava that does not cover the whole length of the stage.
