The Super Leaf is an item that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Overview
In every Mario game the Super Leaf has appeared in, it granted its user tanooki ears and a tail (a full tanooki suit in Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World) and allowed them to spin their tail in order to attack foes or activate switches. It also allowed them to fly by "flapping" their tail and arms after gaining momentum on the ground. Lastly, it let its users glide gently toward the ground, also by flapping the tail, which allowed for easier platforming and farther jumps. In Mario Kart 7, the item, upon use, made a tanooki tail appear on the back of the user's kart for a limited time. Characters could use this tail to bat away items and other racers.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
The Super Leaf appears as an item, and it is an item characters wear, so their hands are free to pick up other items. The Leaf will allow characters to float after their second jump for around 4 seconds, similar to Peach. Characters can use their aerial attacks while floating. Unlike their appearance in the Mario games, the characters can't use the tail to attack the opponents. Once the Super Leaf's effects wear off, the character will lose the tail and ears and by extension the ability to hover in the air.
If a character takes too much damage while under the effects of the Super Leaf, they will lose their tail and ears and the Super Leaf item will drop from them. The item can then be picked up again by the same character or by different characters to 'steal' the item. If the effects of the Super Leaf wore off, then the item will not reappear from the character that had it.
If a character who already has a tail (such as Fox, Charizard, or Pikachu) picks up this item, they will have two tails (their original tail and the raccoon tail). If Bowser Jr. or a Koopaling picks it up, their Koopa Clown Car gets the tail.
Trophy Description
Transform into an adorable version of your normal self thanks to some raccoon ears and a fluffy tail. Unfortunately, you won't be able to fly through the air like Tanooki Mario---but you can hover for a bit by wiggling that tail. Hold the jump button while airborne to pull off this cute tactic.
