For other stages with this name, see Yoshi's Island (SSBM) and Yoshi's Island (SSBB).

You can land on the clouds that float on either side of the stage, but if you do, they won't hold up for long.
Super Smash Bros.'s instruction manual

Yoshi's Island (ヨッシーアイランド, Yoshi Island) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. and is Yoshi's home stage. It is also a playable stage (known as Past Stages: Yoshi's Island N64) in Super Smash Bros. Melee and returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, under the name "Super Happy Tree".

Website description[]

Straight out of Yoshi's Story, this level is just too darn cute for fighting. How are you supposed to kick tail when a smiling heart is showering everyone with joy? But if you manage to overcome the cute music and work up some anger, the simple design of this level is perfect for pummeling. Power-ups often appear on the clouds floating to the left and right of the arena. Grab them quickly, because the clouds will vanish after a few seconds.

Stage layout[]

The stage has a paper and cardboard sort of look. The main platform is on a book. There are three platforms that hover above it. The bottom two are sloping inward a little bit while the top one is flat. On the left side of the stage, there is one cloud, while on the right side, there are two clouds (one near the stage while the other on the other side). The clouds will disappear after standing on them for about four seconds, but will reappear seven seconds later.

Strangely enough, during a round in 1P Game, the clouds on the sides of the stage are absent. A GameShark code can be entered to enable this stage without the clouds on the sides of the baseline platform.

In competitive play[]

This stage is banned due to Cloud camping (namely as Fox, for his Blaster can be used for gimp kills because of the long hitstun) and the fact that certain Characters, such as Link, cannot recover from the far right cloud.

Origin[]

SuperHappyTreeYS

Super Happy Tree as originally seen in Yoshi's Story.

This stage comes from Yoshi's Story. In Yoshi's Story there are clouds that can be used as platforms. Some clouds have to be activated by a switch that runs on a timer. When the time runs out the clouds disappear. In this stage there are cloud platforms on each side of this stage, but they look different from the cloud platforms in Yoshi's Story. When a player stands on a cloud for too long the cloud disappears. This may be a reference to the clouds that disappear when the time runs out. In Yoshi's Story there are hint boxes that gives out hints when hit. The hint boxes can be seen in the background of this stage. The opening of Yoshi's Story states that Yoshi's Island has been turned into a story book and that the Super Happy Tree is gone because of Baby Bowser. The main bottom platform of this stage resembles a book so this could be a reference to how Yoshi's Island has been turned into a story book. Towards the ending of Yoshi's Story Yoshi confronts Baby Bowser. In the same room is the Super Happy Tree. The Super Happy Tree looks very similar to the one that is in the background of this stage. The ending of Yoshi's Story there is a Super Happy Heart that is growing on the tree. But the design of the heart has more resemblance to the heart that is shown when completing a level in Yoshi's Story. The clouds and sun seen in Yoshi's Story also looks similar to the one in this stage. In Yoshi's Island there are enemy birds called "Goonies". Goonies also appear in Yoshi's Story. In this stage a Goonie can be seen flying across this stage and it's design resembles the design used in Yoshi's Story. Also from Yoshi's Story are "Fly Guys" which are flying Shy Guys. Fly Guys can also be seen flying across this stage. [1]

The song used in this stage is a mix between level one of Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Story's title screen. [2]

Trivia[]

  • In Smash 64, the background with the sun, clouds, and ocean remained still no matter which way you looked, giving the appearance of a green screen, but in Melee the background is rendered in 3D.
  • Even though this stage was called Yoshi's Island, it is based on Yoshi's Story, possibly more than the Stage Yoshi's story itself.
  • In Melee, the stage is slightly scaled larger than the original game.
    • In addition, the smiling heart in the middle from the Super Happy Tree moves at a much slower rate.
  • This is the only Smash 64 stage in Melee that's not playable in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
  • On the English version of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate site, the stage was mistakenly listed by it's Spanish translation, "Arbol de la superfelicidad", which roughly translates to "Tree of Superhappiness". This was eventually fixed.
