Staryu, (ヒトデマン, Hitodeman), is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise. In Melee, it replaced its evolution, Starmie.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee out of Poké Balls. Its attack is similar to the attack of Starmie from SSB. It will fly around the screen to find another character to shoot at. Once it stops moving and targets a character, Staryu will start to use Swift. Staryu will not move once it starts using Swift. Any character that makes contact with Swift will take constant damage. Any character can also take damage if they touch Staryu while it's using Swift attack. Staryu's attack does not harm the summoner.

As a trophy

Staryu features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 250+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

These Starshape Pokémon that evolve into Starmie are found in large numbers at the seashore. At night, Staryu's red center glows and blinks on and off. It's said that as long as its red center remains, it can regrow its limbs. Whether it's related to Cleffa, another Pokémon with a vaguely star-shaped appearance, is unknown.
  • Pokémon Red & Blue, 9/98

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl out of Poké Balls in a reprisal of its previous role, with the same method of attacking by using Swift. It appears to have a quicker rate of fire. Pit's shield, however, can reflect this attack, as well as the Space Animal's reflector. (It's noticeably harder to use Falco's reflector on some players, though.) Lucas and Ness PSI magnet can absorb the Swift attack as well.

If a character other than the summoner touches Staryu while it is firing, it will inflict damage and decent knockback enough to KO someone.

Trophy Description

A Star Shape Pokémon. It gathers in groups and flashes the red jewel in the center of its body in time to the twinkling of the stars in the night sky. If it loses appendages, it can regenerate them right away. It can also use Camouflage, which allows it to change its type to match the surrounding terrain. If a Water Stone is used on it, it evolves into Starmie.

In Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS

Trophy Description

This Water-type Pokemon, Staryu, greatly resembles a star. Exposing one to a Water Stone causes it to evolve into Starmie. Another star-shaped Pokemon, Cleffa, exists, but the two don't look all that similar. In Smash Bros., Staryu will attack foes with Swift. Anyone hit will be seeing stars!
