Star Fox 64 (スターフォックス64, Sutā Fokkusu Rokujūyon^?), known as Lylat Wars in Australia and Europe (due to trademark issues), is the second game in the Star Fox series for the Nintendo 64 console. It was released in Japan on April 27, 1997, in North America on July 1, 1997, and in Europe on October 20, 1997.

Additionally, it is a reimagined remake of the original Star Fox, and the first to be released on the Nintendo 64. It was made available for download on the Wii's Virtual Console on April 2, 2007 in North America, April 17, 2007 in Japan and on April 20, 2007 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The planned second game in the series for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Star Fox 2, was canceled due to the upcoming release of the Nintendo 64, but some of its features were used in Star Fox 64, such as all range mode. It was the first game to introduce support for the Rumble Pak. The game received positive ratings from reviewers and critics who praised its smooth animation, detailed visuals, voice acting, and use of multiple gameplay paths. It has been called one of the greatest games of all time.

The music in Star Fox 64 was composed by Koji Kondo and Hajime Wakai. Some of this music was used in the later games of the series.

Plot

While the plot of Star Fox 64 is largely the same as the plot of the original Star Fox, Star Fox 64 goes into more detail about the storyline. The events of this game are known as the Lylat Wars, named after the game's European title. Strange activity is spotted on the planet Venom, part of the Lylat system, where the evil scientist Andross has been exiled.The governing planet, Corneria, sends the Star Fox team to investigate. They consist of pilots James McCloud, Peppy Hare, and Pigma Dengar. After arriving at Venom, Pigma betrays the team, causing James and Peppy to be captured by Andross. Peppy escapes Venom, but James does not return. Peppy barely escaped Venom and returned home to tell James' son Fox about his father's fate.

Super Smash Bros. series

Wolf O'Donnell, a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, made his canon debut to the Star Fox series in this game. Wolf also appeared in the opening sequence of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The music from the Sector Z and Venom stages were originally from Star Fox 64. Also, a trophy of this game's Andross can be collected in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The main theme of this game is a song in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as well as the Star Wolf theme from this game.

By earning gold medals on all of the levels in the game, an on-foot version of the multiplayer mode can be unlocked in which the characters use blasters instead of Arwings and Landmasters. This may be the inspiration for Fox, Falco, and Wolf's Neutral B Moves in the Smash Bros. series.
