Spring Man (スプリングマン) is one of the playable fighters and mascot of the Nintendo Switch game ARMS.
He joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a summonable Assist Trophy. A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after him is also available in the base game.
Character description[]
Spring Man can be considered to be the de facto mascot of ARMS as he was the first revealed character alongside Ribbon Girl at the game's initial announcement; however, according to producer Kosuke Yabuki, he is not to be considered the central protagonist, as that role can go to any of the fighters. Due to being the first and default fighter when starting the game, he can be considered as the "all-rounder" of the cast and can be a great start for beginners.
Spring Man is a 20-year old young athlete and aspiring ARMS fighter who frequently trains at the Spring Gym. He is depicted as having an enthusiastic and confident personality, with a certain pride towards his spring-styled hair and a love for pizza. His official stats include being 5' 11" (182 centimetres) tall and being 168 pounds (76 kg). Per the official manga tie-in as well as Kosuke Yabuki, Spring Man is canonically the third fighter to win the Grand Prix, which can be seen at his ending of the single-player campaign. A mechanical clone of him named Springtron is later introduced as a free DLC character; it is said to have been created in ARMS Labs from blueprints stolen from Mechanica and uses combined data from the other competitors. It is later revealed that Springtron's creator is Dr. Coyle, the nefarious instigator of the game's events due to her unhinged obsession into ARMS research.
Spring Man is one of the select few people in this universe to be born with a gene the causes ARMS, where a person's arms (or other body parts, in the case of Twintelle's hair) to transform into long stretchy material - for Spring Man, his arms fittingly become blue with pink-lined springs. To regain full control of their arms and prevent it from coming loose and untangled, these select few need to wear custom-made masks created by the scientists at ARMS Labs. For some, they use their newfound abilities to compete in the ARMS League, each for various reasons - for Spring Man, he joins the Grand Prix in the hopes of defeating Max Brass to become the champion.
Like with the rest of cast, Spring Man has some abilities that only he can perform. He is capable of deflecting attacks during sidestepping, which is signified by a blue shockwave that emanates from his body. When he is at low-health, his ARMS will automatically become fully charged and remain so as long as his health is low; it's function is fairly similar to Fatal Fury's Desperation mechanic or Super Smash Bros.'s Rage mechanic.
Also like the rest of the cast, Spring Man can equip all kinds of ARMS. However, he (and by extension Springtron) has a default set of ARMS at the start, which are:
- Toaster - a medium-weight Fire-type ARM that resembles a boxing glove with hidden burners on the inside
- Boomerang - a medium-weight Wind-type ARM that fires a projectile in a boomerang-like trajectory and can create tornadoes.
- Tribolt - a lightweight Stun-type ARM that fires three missile-like projectiles for a multi-hit attack.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
“ | Spring Man jumps and dashes around the stage while using his stretchy arms to punch, punch, punch—just like he does in the ARMS game. In a pinch, he can unleash his powerful rush attack to pummel the opponent! | ” |

Assist Trophy[]
Spring Man appears as a summonable Assist Trophy. He will roam and jump around the stage to attack opponents at random with his two Toaster ARMS. If he has taken enough damage, he can perform his own ARMS Rush; much like Min Min's it can trap one opponent if caught in the barrage of punches, though unlike hers, Spring Man's Rush far more closely resembles how it looks in ARMS. He is also one of the handful of Assist Trophies that can perform an Air Dodge. Players can KO him to earn a point in a Timed match.
Mii Fighter Costume[]
A costume for the Mii Brawler modeled after Spring Man is available in the base game and must be acquired separately in the Shop; the mask is available for 900G, while the outfit is 1200G.
Spirit[]
A Spirit of Spring Man is available in the base game. It is a Primary Neutral Spirit under the Ace class. His Spirit Battle uses a Mii Brawler wearing the Spring Man costume, with increased punching power and jump height. The stage is Boxing Ring, which is meant to be a stand-in for Spring Stadium due to the bouncy ropes on either side, and the song that plays is "Title Theme - Wii Sports Club".

Aesthetic[]
Spring Man appears alongside Ribbon Girl, Ninjara, Twintelle, Mechanica, and Master Mummy to assist Min Min to perform her Final Smash, ARMS Rush.
Spring Man also makes a cameo in the background of the Spring Stadium stage, with a graphic of him periodically appearing on the jumbotron by the audience stands alongside the rest of the ARMS cast.
Other[]
Spring Man makes a cameo in Min Min's reveal trailer; in it, he defeats Byte & Barq in a match but then notices the falling Smash invitation amidst his celebration. He successfully grabs it, but is quickly knocked out by Ribbon Girl, with the rest of the cast beginning to fight each other over the invitation before Min Min ultimately claims it.
Trivia[]
- Spring Man is the most recently-debuted Assist Trophy in Smash, as ARMS came out in June 2017.
- Spring Man is one of two Assist Trophies to not appear in their own Spirit Battle, the other being the Black Knight.
- Spring Man is the second Assist Trophy to also appear in a Final Smash, following Riki.
- Spring Man is one of four Assist Trophies to speak English in all regions, following Waluigi, Saki Amamiya, and Kat & Ana. This is consistent with ARMS, where all of the fighters speak in one language across all regions.
- Spring Man is the only Assist Trophy to appear in the cinematic portion of a reveal trailer, as opposed to only showing up in the gameplay section.
- As acknowledged by Masahiro Sakurai during the "Mr. Sakurai Presents 'Min Min'" video, Spring Man shares his name with the villain Springman from the manga series Kinnikuman, who coincidentally was defeated by a character named Ramenman. He also shares his name with a Robot Master from Mega Man 7, which Capcom has also recognized on its Twitter accounts.
