The Splatoon universe (スプラトゥーン Supuratūn) is a franchise first represented in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and later represented in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Splatoon series had its first title on the Wii U, with a sequel released on the Nintendo Switch. The series was represented in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in the form of Inkling Mii Fighter Costumes for the Mii Gunner; the Inkling characters were then confirmed to be newcomers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being the first official iteration of the characters in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Franchise Description

Splatoon was first created by the EAD in late 2013. The team had thought of over seventy game ideas, but decided to focus on a game involving covering the map in ink. At first, this concept featured black and white blocks of tofu with noses that sprayed ink. The game featured a top-down view, allowing the tofu blocks to blend in with their splattered turf.

However, these characters presented a variety of problems, so development began on a different character that was vaguely humanoid in shape. A rabbit was chosen as the design, because its floppy ears would indicate what direction it was traveling when viewed from above. Many EAD developers criticized this idea, so ideas such as Mario, robots, and macho men were considered. The rabbits were later scrapped in favour of humanoid squids, which, the team felt, fit the theme better. They could also be easily used as arrows on the map. However, the transformation mechanic was yet to be integrated during this period of development—these anthropomorphic squids did not transform fully into squids before swimming around, unlike the final game's Inklings.

In the game's Hero Mode, the Octarians, the historic nemesis of the Inklings, built an underground facility, accessible from Octo Valley via a number of kettle-shaped teleporters. After the disappearance of the Zapfish from Inkopolis Plaza, the protagonist, wearing the Hero Suit and wielding the Hero Shot, must infiltrate these bases and rescue all the Zapfish. By retrieving these electric fish, the Zapfish and Great Zapfish returns to Inkopolis and keep providing power to the city, and the Octarians are stopped from activating The Great Octoweapons, invading the Inklings' world, and claiming their land.

Splatoon 2 was created as a direct sequel to Splatoon to meet the existing fans' expectations. It was important for the development team that it appeals to not only the first game's playerbase, but to the demographic that was interested in Splatoon despite not buying it. This makes it a proper sequel in the team's eyes. The intended appeal was worked toward by giving the game a new take on existing aspects and resetting old strategies, creating an entirely new meta that would still change based on updates. While performance was a factor in changes to weapons and gear, the developers focused more on how they would feel to use. The dev team also set the game world two years later than in Splatoon to make returning players feel as if the series were growing with them. Another point of focus was on utilizing the features of the Nintendo Switch, such as creating tactile experiences using HD Rumble, making sure Splatoon 2 always runs at 60 FPS and continued amiibo compatibility for the series. The game was teased on October 20, 2016, in the First Look at Nintendo Switch trailer. It was properly announced in the Nintendo Switch livestream on January 13, 2017, confirming that it is a sequel and not an updated Splatoon port in the vein of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Splatoon 2 takes place approximately two years after the final Splatfest event of the first game, in which the pop idol Marie proved victorious over her cousin and fellow Squid Sister, Callie. While the two girls seem to carry on as normal afterwards, the usually inseparable cousins begin to spend more and more time apart due to their growing solo careers, with Marie beginning to worry about whether Callie was negatively affected by the Splatfest result. After going out of Inkopolis to see her parents, Marie returns home to discover that the Great Zapfish that powers the city has gone missing again, as has Callie. Fearing that the evil Octarians are once again involved, Marie takes up her role as Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon again and recruits an Inkling from Inkopolis Square, the player character, to become Agent 4 and investigate. With assistance from both Marie and weapons expert Sheldon, Agent 4 makes their way through Octo Canyon fighting off Octarians and recovering several stolen Zapfish. They eventually discover that Callie herself has sided with the Octarians after being brainwashed by their leader, DJ Octavio. With everyone's effort, however, Marie manages to break Callie free from her mind control, and together they help Agent 4 defeat Octavio once again. With the Great Zapfish safely returned to Inkopolis, the Squid Sisters happily reunite and resume their musical career together.

The events of the Octo Expansion story mode takes place at the same time as the base game's story does. The Octo Expansion is the 'vacation' Agent 3 and Cap'n Cuttlefish are on, which is referenced within the base game's single-player campaign. When Cap'n Cuttlefish and Agent 3 were in Octo Valley, Agent 3 battled against an Octoling that somehow led to both the Octoling and Cap'n Cuttlefish being captured and taken deep underground to an abandoned station in the Deepsea Metro, ran by the Kamabo Corporation. With the Octoling having lost their memory, they are nicknamed 'Agent 8' and team up with Cap'n Cuttlefish to ride the Deepsea Metro and escape the facility, along the way collecting mem cakes. Agent 8 and Cap'n Cuttlefish meet mysterious and shady characters such as the Telephone, C.Q. Cumber, Iso Padre and familiar faces such as Pearl, Marina and Agent 3.
