Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Sonikku za Hejiihoggu) is SEGA's mascot and Mario's "rival", or so Nintendo has said. He makes his first Smash appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as the second third-party character, after Solid Snake.
Sonic was officially confirmed to be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl during The Fall 2007 Nintendo conference on October 10, 2007. He will be fast and may be hard to control. Sonic will be bringing moves from his retro games into Brawl.

Sonic has been a popular suggestion for years, dating back to the now infamous April Fool's joke in EGM that claimed that Sonic and Tails could be unlocked in Melee by getting 20 or more KO's in Cruel Melee. During production of Brawl, a Japan-only poll named Sonic as the top third-party choice for inclusion. The announcement of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games brought further hope for his inclusion. As stated above, he was officially announced to much joy throughout the gaming and SSB community on October 10, 2007.

Sonic is a confirmed character for Brawl. He is described as being a very fast character, similar to Fox, Captain Falcon and Falco in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Judging by the E for All demo and an update on Smash Bros. DOJO!!, his attacks are based on more classic moves from Sonic's earlier platforming games. He is the only Brawl character who was included in the game's development in 2007 (all the other Brawl characters were in developement before beforehand) according to an interview with Sakurai.
Taunts
One of Sonic's taunts is making a figure 8 with his feet, saying "You're too slow!". This was confirmed on Dojo's 1/24/08 update, as well as a past update that explained about various taunts for characters (In the past Super Smash Bros. games, each character only had one taunt. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, they all now have three taunts.) Sonic can also break-dance and flip and cross his arms.

There are three methods in which you can unlock Sonic. One method is completing the Subspace Emissary Mode. Another method is completing Classic Mode with 10 different characters. The third method is playing 300 VS Matches.

Melee Rumor
A common rumor regarding Super Smash Bros. Melee was that Sonic and Tails were playable characters. It was a false statement that one could unlock them by defeating twenty opponents in the Cruel Melee mode, as it was an April Fools joke from Electronic Gaming Monthly.

However, Sonic makes his playable appearance in SSBB as you know and Tails, Knuckles, and Silver, also make a brief cameo appearance in Sonic's Green Hill Zone stage, running around the loop. Shadow the hedgehog also makes his first appearance in Brawl as an Assist Trophy.

Final Smash
After breaking and using the Smash Ball with Sonic, he uses the Chaos Emeralds to turn Super Sonic. In this form, he is fully controllable, and flies around the screen at high speeds. It is also possible to boost his speed to make him fly faster. During this form he is invincible, and attacks by ramming enemies while flying.

The amount of damage Super Sonic inflicts depends on his speed. The faster, the more powerful!
