*'''November 13: "Three Different Taunts"''' [http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/howto/technique/technique07.html]: The taunting system returns, but with a new twist that applies only when the game is played with the Wii Remote / Nunchuk controller setup; each character has ''three'' available taunts to them this time. They are achieved by pressing the 1 button for the "up taunt", the 2 button for the "down taunt", and the 1 and 2 buttons simultaneously for the "side taunt".

Revision as of 07:09, 13 November 2007

In 2007 up to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. Dojo!!, the website dedicated to information about the game and hosted by the game's chief developer Masahiro Sakurai, underwent a redesign and proceeded to show pieces of new information about the game at a rate of once every weekday. Each update provided by Sakurai to the site is reworded and reposted here.

List of updates

This list of updates covers all updates posted from October 15 to the present; for updates posted from May 22 to October 12, see Smash Bros. DOJO!! updates (archive).

  • October 15: "New Pork City" [1]: The EarthBound/Mother universe stage is revealed as a location in Mother 3 which Lucas goes to: New Pork City. It is purportedly one of the largest Smash stages ever, about the scale of Melee's Temple, but in structure the foreground looks more like Rainbow Cruise (minus the moving screen). The background is an impressive city miniature, and a stage character named Ultimate Chimera will appear and sport a bite attack powerful enough to emulate the Home-Run Bat.
  • October 16: "STADIUM: Home-Run Contest" [2]: The Home-Run Contest from Melee returns in Brawl with the essential concept intact, but with four differences: 1. There is a forcefield surrounding the platform so the Sandbag doesn't fly off when hit with anything less strong than the Home Run Bat. 2. An available two-player cooperative mode allows two players to pile on the damage faster. 3. An available two-player competitive mode has the players taking turns seeing who can smash Sandbag the farthest. 4. Both these two-player modes can be played with Nintendo WFC.
  • October 17: "Meowth" [3]: Meowth is revealed to return in Brawl as a Poke Ball Pokemon, but while it appears to use the same attack as its first appearance "Pay Day", its fashion of throwing out the coins appears different; Meowth seems landlocked as it hurls coins in front of it.
  • October 17: "How to use the Wii Remote" [4]: A lengthy update that gives full coverage of how the actions and button comboes are mapped onto the Wii Remote when it's used to play and held sideways without the Nunchuk. The update also reveals that when a character is charged up for a Final Smash, one just presses the button for a special move to unleash it. The Oct 18 E for All in Los Angeles that showcases a playable version of Brawl will have this Wii Remote-based controller setup provided.
  • October 18: "Little Mac" [5]: Little Mac, midget-sized boxing protagonist from the NES game Punch-Out!!, is now confirmed as an assist trophy. He dashes forward, jabs at a target twice, and uppercuts him.
  • October 19: "Peach: Final Smash" [6]: Peach's Final Smash is called the Peach Blossom. In a bizarre series of effects, the current battle screen is "revealed" to be surrounded by giant 2D images of Peach and pink leaves. It causes all opponents around her to be put to sleep (how close they are to Peach measures how long they will sleep), and a bunch of health-replenishing peaches appears on the stage for Peach to consume at will. One of a few Final Smashes that aren't actual offensive measures but supportive to the character itself.

  • October 22: "PictoChat" [7]: In perhaps the most original stage revealed for a Smash Bros. game, a stage thematically based on the PictoChat feature on all Nintendo DS systems is covered in detail. It is a blank stage where "platforms" and "obstacles" take on the form of stylus-drawn brush strokes that disappear after a while, and the main stage platform itself is a black text box showing character names. Music for this stage is revealed to be the music built into the Wii system itself (the various "channels", in other words).
  • October 23: "Donkey Kong Makes His Stand" [8]: A video about Donkey Kong and his role in the single-player Adventure mode is posted.
  • October 24: "STADIUM: Target Smash!" [9]: Showcases the return of the Target test feature of previous games, but with major differences; only five stages actually exist. Any character can play and score at each of these five stages, which are all visually revamped to resemble outdoors areas, and items are found throughout to help you. The update also makes an unrelated announcement: the ability to save, view, and transmit replay data of matches.
  • October 25: "King Dedede" [10]: The newest playable character revealed to debut for the game is none other than Kirby's other nemesis and rival, the hammer-wielding penguin-like self-styled emperor King Dedede. This makes the Kirby universe the first to have been established with one character by Melee and suddenly gain two new characters in Brawl. Dedede is a heavyweight character like Bowser and Donkey Kong.
  • October 26: "King Dedede: Special Moves" [11]: King Dedede's forward B, up B, and down B moves are detailed. His up Special Move is the Super Dedede Jump, where he leaps up into the air and slams back down hard, though there are several different opportunities for vulnerability on his part. His side Special Move is the Waddle Dee Toss, which is similar to Peach's Turnip pulling ability, but Dedede can summon three different varieties of helper character: Waddle Dee, Waddle Doo, and Gordo. His Down Special Move is the Jet Hammer, a chargeable strike with his motorized hammer that can have damage recoil if charged up a long time.

  • October 29: "Stage Builder" [12]: This update details an immense Smash Bros. series first: A level editor named the Stage Builder, where you can make visually-simple stages with platforms, ladders, and so forth, and customize their music. These don't take up much space, so they can be saved on SD cards, as well as transferred over Nintendo WFC. There will be a feature where you can submit one stage design to Nintendo itself per day, and in return you can get one stage a day that someone else made and submitted to Nintendo.
  • October 30: "Classic" [13]: Reveals the return of the Classic single-player mode. It is essentially the same format as Melee's Classic mode has always been, with normal matches with randomly-determined opponent characters interspersed with Giant, Team, and Metal battles. The Coins you earn at the end of a match return as well, for likely the same purpose (but Sakurai states "you don’t use them to shop"). The way Sakurai states how stage 1 is based on The Legend of Zelda and stage 3 is based on Pokemon may imply that each of these franchises will get multiple stages.
  • October 31: "The Summit" [14]: The spectacular Ice Climber stage of Brawl is revealed and detailed as The Summit. It takes place on the frozen peak of a mountain underneath a starlit sky with the Northern Lights visible. After a while, the top portion of the mountain that is the stage will break off and slide down the mountain's left side for a while, before it splashes into arctic oceans and floats, becoming the rest of the stage. Hazards such as the Polar Bear and a colorful-looking giant fish will be present in this water-floating portion of the stage.
  • November 1: "Meta Knight: Final Smash" [15]: Meta Knight's Final Smash is identified as Galaxia Darkness: He swings his cape forward as if it's a grab move. If there's no one in front of him, the move and its Smash Ball is wasted. Any characters that get caught up by his cape get slashed a lot and receive loads of damage and get knocked around a lot, all the while shrouding the entire stage in darkness.
  • November 2: "On-Screen Appearances" [16]: In the original Super Smash Bros., characters would appear onto the stage in their own unique methods in the 3-second countdown prior to the start of the match (Mario jumping out of a warp pipe, etc.). As this update reveals, this cosmetic aspect makes a return in Brawl.

  • November 5: "Fox's Misfortune" [17]: A video continuing the story of the video in the "Donkey Kong Makes His Stand" video: Fox McCloud and his Arwing have crashed near the Kong's jungle. When Diddy Kong arrives to investigate, suddenly out of the lake Rayquaza emerges and takes Diddy hostage. Fox suddenly appears from the Arwing, rescues Diddy, and drives Rayquaza off by reflecting its Dragon Pulse back at it with his Reflector.
  • November 5: "Fire Emblem: Fire Emblem Theme" [18]: The first music file in a long while is posted, this time being the main Fire Emblem theme arranged by the same individuals behind the Super Smash Bros. Brawl main theme, and with new lyrics added. Sakurai actually posts the translated lyrics with this update.
  • November 6: "Items from Previous Installments" [19]: This update reveals a lot of items from the two previous Super Smash Bros. games returning in generally unchanged form, which are the Beam Sword, Home-run Bat, Fire Flower, Freezie, Party ball, Super Mushroom, Bob-omb, and Green Shell. The Beam Sword is light blue and can become very long with attacks, while each character's style of smashing swing with the bat is now unique to that character.
  • November 7: "Gray Fox" [20]: The first Assist Trophy to be revealed for a third-party franchise in Brawl is Gray Fox (a.k.a. Frank Jaeger the Cyborg Ninja) from the Metal Gear series. He acts similar to Samurai Goroh and Lyn in sword-attack, but he slices repeatedly and the sword swings can reflect projectiles.
  • November 7: "Grab and Throw" [21]: Another How To Play update illustrating basic Smash Bros. concepts, this time covering the concept of grabbing opponents and attacking and/or throwing them.
  • November 8: "Lucas: Special Moves." [22]: All four of Lucas' special moves are revealed. His up, down, and forward Special moves are essentially the same PK Thunder, PK Fire, and PSI Magnet moves that Ness had previously, but with PK Fire being more powerful and shooting out its projectile horizontally. His new Standard Special move is PK Freeze, which is chargeable like Ness' PK Flash but sacrifices power for freezing capability. The update also shows the more psonic nature of Lucas' normal attacks, and his grab is a Rope Snake that's used as an item in the Mother games and as a Tether Recovery measure in this game.
  • November 9: "Norfair" [23]: The Metroid stage previously seen during playtests at E for All is officially described in this update as Norfair, which is a similar lava-based stage as SSB's Planet Zebes and SSBM's Brinstar.

  • November 12: "Great Aether" [24]: Ike's Final Smash, Great Aether, is officially showcased. The motions are same as his Aether attack, but is larger, more powerful, and can affect more enemies.
  • November 13: "Three Different Taunts" [25]: The taunting system returns, but with a new twist that applies only when the game is played with the Wii Remote / Nunchuk controller setup; each character has three available taunts to them this time. They are achieved by pressing the 1 button for the "up taunt", the 2 button for the "down taunt", and the 1 and 2 buttons simultaneously for the "side taunt".
