Skull Kids (スタルキッド,, Stal Kid) are a recurring type of enemy in The Legend of Zelda series. A specific Skull Kid, under the influence of Majora's Mask, serves as the primary antagonist of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

This particular Skull Kid joined Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a summonable Assist Trophy, and later returns for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after the Skull Kid's clothes is also available in the base game of the latter.

Character Description[]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]

Skull Kid in Ocarina of Time

Skull Kids in Ocarina of Time

Skull Kids first appear in Ocarina of Time and reside in the Lost Woods. Upon first seeing them, Navi implies that Skull Kids are actually lost children who have wandered into the Woods and have lost their faces, which is why they have a tendency to wear a mask. Young Link can befriend a Skill Kid by playing "Saria's Song" while standing atop a tree stump; if successful, the Skull Kid will give Young Link a Piece of Heart. Later in the game, if one sees Young Link wearing the Skull Mask, he will ask if he can have it as it will make him look tougher; Young Link can sell the mask as part of the Mask Trading Sequence, though the Skull Kid will only pay 10 Rupees instead of the required 20. If Adult Link encounters the Skull Kids, he will be attacked by needle shots that come from their flutes, as they do not like adults. They will drop an Orange Rupee if defeated.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[]

One particular Skull Kid gains a far more prominent role in Majora's Mask, serving as the game's primary antagonist. Long before the beginning of the story, the Skull Kid befriended the Four Giants. Following Termina's separation into four regions and the giants' departure, the Skull Kid spirals into depression, fearing that he will become alone. As a result, he begins a destructive rampage all throughout Termina. Fed up with his antics, the residents perform the Oath to Order, needing the Giants' aid. Angered by what he has done, the Four Giants banish the Skull Kid from Termina and threaten to kill him if he disobeyed. Dismayed and frightened, the Skull Kid "returned to the heavens" (which is a hyperbole in the fable, as in reality he went into hiding). Sometime later, the Fairy siblings Tatl and Tael meet the Skull Kid inside a tree hollow in Termina Field, taking shelter from a storm. The three huddle together for warmth, thus forming a bond.

Much later, the Skull Kid encounters the travelling Happy Mask Salesman, who is in possession of Majora’s Mask to which the Skull Kid steals. Upon wearing it, the Mask unleashes a powerful magic that creates its own version of Termina based on the memories and imagination of the Skull Kid, who's own internal sadness is said to have amplified the Mask's magic power. Eventually, the Skull Kid and the Fairy siblings encounter Young Link at the portal in a dark forest. They ambush him and steal the Ocarina of Time before escaping back to the alternate Termina, with Young Link in pursuit. In the other world, the Skull Kid uses the Mask's magic to trap Link within the body of a Deku Scrub and leaves with Tael, while Tatl is trapped with Link. Eventually, they find the Skull Kid atop the Clock Tower on the Final Day, now beginning to bring the Moon down to cause destruction. Link manages to shoot the Skull Kid with a Bubble Blast, regains the Ocarina, and plays the "Song of Time", thus reversing time back to the First Day. After reverting back to his human form, the Happy Mask Salesman urges Link to retrieve Majora's Mask before the Skull Kid can bring about the apocalypse in three days.

After inheriting even more great magic power from the Mask, the Skull Kid imprisons the Four Giants within their respective temples; with the regions now without their guardians and their temples tainted, Termina begins to suffer from enormous disasters. As the game progresses, the Skull Kid also terrorizes several individuals and beings and creating grievances for Link to deal with; these include harming the Great Fairy, turning Kafei into a child, and getting the Zora Eggs stolen by the Gerudo Pirates. Eventually, Link frees the Giants from their confinements and faces off against the Skull Kid again on the Final Day atop the Clock Tower, though now he performs the Oath to Order and have the Four Giants stop the Moon, knocking the Skull Kid unconscious in the process. The Majora's Mask frees itself from its host and flies up into the Moon, with Young Link and Tatl in pursuit for the final battle.

In the aftermath from Majora's defeat and the Moon returning to its orbit, Link meets up with the Four Giants, the Happy Mask Salesman, and the Skull Kid on the outskirts of Termina. The Giants reassure the Skull Kid of their friendship and return to their resting places. The Skull Kid asks Link if they can be friends too, remarking that he smells like the "fairy kid" who taught him "Saria's Song" in the Lost Woods (implying this Skull Kid to be the same one Link first encountered in Ocarina of Time). Young Link departs Termina with Epona, while the Skull Kid and the Fairy siblings celebrate the Carnival of Time. The final scene shows a drawing carved on a tree trunk depicting the Skull Kid with Link, Tatl, Tael, and the Four Giants.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess[]

A Skull Kid as he appears in Twilight Princess

A Skull Kid returns in Twilight Princess, once again residing in the Lost Woods. Link must play a game of hide-and-seek with the Skull Kid, as he will lead him to the location of the Master Sword within the Sacred Grove if he is found several times. When Link returns to the Lost Woods later in the game, the Skull Kid will this time lead him to the location of the Temple of Time; however, he will now summon puppets to attack Link for him. If Link visits the Sacred Grove, he can see lights similar to the Skull Kid's lantern within the tunnels, but will disappear if he gets close.

Skull Kid's only appearance in the game is through two Stickers.

Assist Trophy[]

The Skull Kid from Majora's Mask appears as a summonable Assist Trophy. Upon appearing, the Skull Kid will float behind the fight plane and dispel magic; as a result, either one of three detrimental effects occurs for a few seconds - flipping or mirroring the camera, making all directional inputs reversed, or turning all fighters invisible.

As the Skull Kid only resides in the background, he cannot be attacked or interacted with. He also does not pick a "side", as all of the camera trickery affects all characters, summoner included.

Assist Trophy[]

The Skull Kid from Majora's Mask returns as a summonable Assist Trophy, with its actions remaining largely unchanged.

Mii Fighter Costume[]

A costume for the Mii Brawler modeled after the Skull Kid is available in the base game and must be acquired separately in the Shop; the mask is available for 450G, while the outfit is 650G.

Spirits[]

A Spirit of Skull Kid (as it appears in Ocarina of Time) is available in the base game. It is a Primary Grab Spirit under the Advanced class. His Spirit Battle uses a Mii Brawler wearing the Skull Kid costume, and is assisted by Skull Kid himself (turning the fighters invisible) and two tiny Meta Knights (meant to represent Tatl and Tael). The stage is the Hazard-less form of Distant Planet and is covered in fog, which is meant to emulate the Lost Woods, and the song that plays is "Saria's Song / Middle Boss Battle". Only the Mii Brawler must be defeated to win.

The Skull Kid Spirit is also enhanceable; when it reaches Level 99, it will transform into the Skull Kid from Majora's Mask (appropriately called Skull Kid & Majora's Mask). It is a Primary Grab Spirit under the Legendary class.
