For fighter info, see Simon (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate).

Simon Belmont (シモン・ベルモンド Shimon Berumondo?) is the first main protagonist of the classic Castlevania series (particularly the first game and its sequel Simon’s Quest), and a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is the eighth third-party character, following Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud Strife and Bayonetta.

Character Description[]

A member of the Belmonts, a clan of vampire hunters as well as one of the many wielders of the Vampire Killer, an enchanted vampire-slaying whip, Simon Belmont began his battle against Count Dracula in the year 1691 AD, following in the footsteps of his distant ancestors, Leon, Trevor and Christopher Belmont, the third of whom Simon heard tales of. When a black mass successfully resurrects Dracula on Easter Day, Simon journeys through the vampire lord's castle to fulfill his destiny as a vampire hunter. Simon successfully defeated Dracula, but as he burned, the Prince of Blood laid a curse onto Simon that cut down his lifespan and would transfer to all of Transylvania with the Count's resurrection.

Seven years later as the curse comes close to terminating Simon, a mysterious woman tells Simon of a possible way to rid himself of the curse: by gathering Dracula's remains, his eyeball, ribcage, nail, heart and ring, and burning them to ashes to entirely vanquish Dracula.

The people of Transylvania, nervous that Simon's quest could lead to Dracula's early return, gave him extremely vague hints to him or even lied to him out of fear that he'd inadvertently re-unleash Dracula upon the land. Simon returned to the ruins of Castlevania to destroy the pieces, but a hidden sixth relic, Dracula's fang, emerged along with the other remains Simon had collected, summoning a specter directly controlled by the dark lord. Simon defeated Dracula again with ease and returned home, his name being hailed by the people.

Simon's story would obviously not be the last. The one directly after him would be of Juste Belmont in Harmony of Dissonance, where he saves his friends Lydie and Maxim from being sacrificed to resurrect Dracula. He fights an abomination made solely from the remains of Dracula and grandfathers Richter, also a fighter in Ultimate.

The crossover game Castlevania Judgment is an interquel where Simon is brought into the Time Rift by the time-traveler Aeon, as part of a plot to stop a demon called the Time Reaper from destroying reality. Simon's personal story in this game, set between the first and second games, has him seeking a battle with his ancestor Trevor to gauge his own worth with the Vampire Killer. Simon eventually defeats Trevor and accepts that he is much more than the weapon itself. His Arcade Mode ending leads directly into the events of Simon's Quest.

Simon's first adventure has been retold in many different forms, with the Sharp X68000/Castlevania Chronicles version bearing the most resemblance to the NES original. Super Castlevania IV has Simon traverse a harrowingly dangerous land composing of a forest, a cursed underground city, a cavern, and more before setting foot in Dracula's Castle. There is also a game named Haunted Castle where Simon is blue-haired, wields a longsword before obtaining a whip, and weds a woman named Serena who is kidnapped by Dracula, but many sources contradict this being the character.

In the alternate Lords of Shadow universe, Simon is the direct son of Trevor Belmont, who was brutally killed while fighting Dracula, in this continuity being his insane great grandfather Gabriel. Simon journeys to the vampire's castle to avenge the deaths of his parents. As he fights his way to the castle, Simon is assisted by the mysterious Alucard, who is revealed to be resurrected Trevor, having been killed by Dracula/Gabriel. They defeat their ancestor together, but being human and dhampir, part their separate ways.

Simon's visual design in earlier installments paid homage to 80s "barbarian"-style heroes such as Conan the Barbarian. His most famous visual design, used for Castlevania Chronicles, was drawn by Ayami Kojima. It combines the general appearance with a "bishounen"-style character design seen in various other Kojima works, sporting long magenta-colored hair, heeled boots, faux fur on his shoulder, a large sparkly belt, and a sleek black whip rather than the usual brown.

While his Judgment design attempted to reflect the Kojima design, it was mocked and scorned by fans for Simon's facial resemblance to manga character Light Yagami of Death Note, though as the entire game's cast received heavy redesigns by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata, it was difficult to avoid. His alternate Lords of Shadow design pays homage to both designs in terms of outfit and color scheme while giving him a much larger, rougher build. A beard accompanies his now scarlet hair, he bares some of his muscular chest and his entire left bicep, and his whip now has a thorned look.

His appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate uses his classic late 80s design and also the design for his action figure from NECA but omitting the sheathed sword for unknown reasons, neatening his blonde hair, and basing the whip on the Combat Cross, used in Lords of Shadow.

Simon has made appearances in crossover games including the Wii fighting game Castlevania Judgment and as a DLC character for the HD team-based multiplayer game Harmony of Despair in his original 8-bit form. Simon's first appearance in a multi-universe crossover game was the GameCube fighting game Dream Mix TV World Fighters alongside fellow Konami guest Solid Snake. In this game also appears Bomberman, Moai, and.......Optimus Prime?

In other media, Simon's most infamous appearance was in the cartoon Captain N: The Game Master, portrayed as an egotistical coward who carries a torch for Lana and butts heads with the protagonist Kevin.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

As a playable character[]

Simon appears as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Simon was announced in mid August 2018, alongside Richter Belmont who served as an Echo Fighter to Simon, meaning that they share the same moveset, although some of their moves originated from Richter. Their only difference is the color of their Holy Water.

Simon’s voice actors are reprised from both Japan-exclusive’s Dream Mix TV World (Hideo Ishikawa) and the English dub version of the Castlevania fighting game Judgement (Keith Silverstein) respectively.

Trivia[]

  • Along with Mario, Mega Man, and its fast paced military action themed sibling Contra, Castlevania has long been considered a Nintendo classic for filling in the niche of a horror themed and fantasyesque platforming game. Classic Castlevania games are also considered to have helped represent the difficulty testament of Nintendo Hard, being games that are challenging, tricky, yet sense tempering and extremely rewarding with the effort.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Simon's second appearance in a multi-franchise crossover fighting game, with his first appearance being the Japan-exclusive GameCube game Dream Mix TV World Fighters which also starred Solid Snake as a playable fighter. Simon and Richter, or homages to them at least, were also originally planned to be playable characters in the Konami fighting game Battle Tryst, under the names "Shemon" and "Rheter."
