Shoryuken (昇龍拳, lit. "Rising Dragon Fist") is Ryu's Up Special Move. Ryu does a leaping, upward uppercut. Doing the inputs of the original Street Fighter series (forward, down, down-forward) before pressing A or B will make him invincible for the rest of the move (notably, in a similar fashion to Dan Hibiki's Koryuken, a similar move which has a one-in-eight chance of invincibility in the Street Fighter games). It will also make it stronger and even prevent Ryu from being in a helpless state.
Origin
Shoryuken has been one of Ryu's most signature special moves in the Street Fighter series, used by almost all Ansatsuken practitioners and imitators. It has also been used by Ryu's friend and rival Ken Masters, as well as Akuma (who uses a stronger, lethal variant called "Gou Shoryuken") and Gouken (who does not actually have the normal Shoryuken as a special move but uses its Shin variant as an Ultra and has a version called "Kinjite Shoryuken" as his Super Combo.) Ryu's fan Sakura Kasugano uses an alternate version called "Shououken" in which she runs at the opponent before performing the jumping uppercut, with her opening run causing damage. Dan Hibiki possesses a variant called "Koryuken" which, while indistinguishable from a Shoryuken (Or indeed, a "Koho" uppercut from various SNK fighting games), has a one in eight chance of causing Dan to flash white, making him invincible for a brief moment. Sean Matsuda uses a double fisted variant called "Dragon Smash" in Street Fighter III: Third Strike (originally in previous versions, Sean performed a standard Shoryuken but punched his opponent to the ground afterward.) Street Fighter IV endboss Seth also uses a Shoryuken and can perform it three times in a row. in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Deadpool uses this move as his "launcher" move.
