Sans is a major side character in the indie-RPG game Undertale.

A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after him was made available as DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In Undertale

Sans is major side character in Undertale. He is a supporting character in the Neutral and Pacifist routes, but serves as a heroic antagonist in the genocide route. He is the older brother of Papyrus, and a resident of the small town of Snowdin.

Often perceived as lazy, he is seen many times throughout the game sleeping or taking breaks. He also enjoys pulling rather childish pranks, such as using whoopee cushions or putting eye paint on a telescope.

Despite this, Sans can be vastly serious at times, even telling the protagonist that they'd already "b e d e a d w h e r e t h e y s t a n d" if Toriel had not promised to protect them. During his boss battle in the genocide route, he does everything he can to try and kill the protagonist, even faking mercy, and tells them they should be burning in hell.

It is also implied that he once lived on the surface and longs to go back, but "Gave up trying to go back a long time ago."

In spite of all of this, Sans is considerate to the people he deeply cares for, such as his brother Papyrus, Toriel, Alphys, and his friends at Grillby's.

He may also have a scientific background due to his ability to teleport, his relationship with Alphys, his workshop, and the quantum physics book.[1]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

A costume for the Mii Gunner modeled after Sans was made available as a part of the Round 3 batch of DLC costumes. Bundled with the costume is a new remix of his boss battle theme "MEGALOVANIA", arranged by creator Toby Fox.

Trivia

• This is notably the first time Sans has ever been officially modeled in 3D.
• This is also the first time Sans has officially wore pink slippers. In Undertale, he wore white slippers, but fan-art depicted him with pink slippers instead.
• The hands of the costume were originally supposed to have fingers, but were changed to be more mitten-like per Toby Fox's request.
• On September 14th, 2020, Masahiro Sakurai made a tweet celebrating Undertale's fifth anniversary with a picture showing Sans and Ness on Onett, referencing Toby Fox's early game development endeavors with his "Halloween Hack" mod for EarthBound.
• Sans is the first Mii costume to come with a music track.
