This article is about Samus's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For other uses, see Samus Aran. Also, for information about the result of Samus using her Final Smash attack, see Zero Suit Samus (SSBB).

Samus (サムス, Samusu) is a character appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Unveiled at E3 2006, Samus's Final Smash attack results in her Power Suit being damaged and removed, transforming her into Zero Suit Samus. She is able to turn back into her Power Suit when Zero Suit Samus uses her Final Smash. [1]. After the attack, the damaged parts of her power suit can be thrown as weapons.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Multiple useful projectiles. Her Charge Shot and Super Missiles are some of the most powerful projectiles in the game, and her Homing missiles are extremely useful.
  • Can missile-cancel
  • Down Aerial is a powerful spike
  • Down Smash is quick and powerfu
  • Back Aerial still a good finisher, and Down Tilt is an even better one
  • Forward, Neutral, and Up Aerials and Up Smash are quick and have high priority
  • Bomb Jumping gives great horizontal recovery and small vertical recovery
  • Tether Recovery option with Grapple Beam
  • She is very heavy. Combined with great recovery options and lack of a huge target for her weight, Samus is one of the hardest characters to KO.
  • Jab is quick, has a large hitbox, even hitting behind Samus, and clanks with most moves.
  • Aerial tether has incredible range, decent stun, and no landing lag. (A technique known as Grapple Canceling or Grapple Boxing)
  • Charge shot from a perfect shield block has guaranteed damage.
  • Lots of combo options.
  • If the situation requires it, the player can transform into Zero Suit Samus by using her up & down taunts.
  • Despite being a heavy-weight, her attacks are very quick.
  • Can wall jump
  • With her Bomb and multiple recovery options she is one of the best Guard Breakers.
  • Bomb is very useful for mindgames.
  • With her projectiles and floaty aerials, Samus makes for a good edgeguarder, as you can send off two homing missles, then Charge Shots horizontally or rain Bombs downward, then spike them, and her floaty jumps, bomb jumping and Up Special Move allows her to recover well.
  • Has almost no landing lag on Aerials.

Cons:

  • Quick, high priority moves have low knockback and damage
  • Grab is slow if it misses
  • Large Target
  • Powerful moves are on the slow side, making it hard for Samus to score quick kills
  • Slow rolling
  • Can be juggled in the air due to being floaty
  • A forced change in play style if Final Smash is used
  • Special taunt to change into Zero Suit Samus can be difficult to pull off correctly

Changes from Melee to Brawl

  • Side Special changed in appearance.
  • Super missiles do vertical knockback.
  • Screw Attack traps opponents (as in Super Smash Bros.).
  • "Bomb jumping" is less effective.
  • Less knockback on neutral aerial
  • Down Tilt more powerful
  • Bombs no longer explode on enemy contact
  • Can't perform moves out of Morph Ball form after bomb jumping
  • Slightly slower
  • Missiles home-in better
  • Charge Shot does slightly more damage, but has a fraction of its original knockback
  • Standard Special has less range
  • Grapple beam has less range and she can't extend it by pressing "up" and "down" on the Control Pad when pressing "Z".

Role in Subspace Emissary

Samus infiltrates the base of the Subspace Army without her Power Suit. Along the way, she meets and frees captured Pikachu. After fighting off two Shadowbug clones of her Power Armor, Samus reacquires her Power Suit with the help of Pikachu. Soon afterwards, the duo are attacked by Ridley.

Samus and Pikachu survive their encounter and continue to investigate the base, which is under Red Alert. After much exploring, they come upon the mysterious Ancient Minister inside a storeroom with many unarmed bombs guarded by inactive R.O.B.s.

Later, Captain Falcon, Olimar, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong break into the storeroom through another door and confront the Ancient Minister. Ganondorf's hologram appears and orders the R.O.B. army to detonate the Subspace Bombs. When the Ancient Minister attempts to stop them, Ganondorf overrides their systems, taking control of them and ordering them to attack the leader. The group attempt to stop the R.O.B.s from detonating the bombs. Ganondorf sends in reinforcements to deal with them. The Ancient Minister shoots down the reinforcements, shedding its clothes to reveal its identity as R.O.B., the leader of the R.O.B.s, allying himself with the player's team. After the battle with the reinforcements, Samus and the others make their way to Captain Falcon's Falcon Flyer in which she and the others have her rematch with Ridley, now Meta Ridley. After the Space Pirate is defeated, the Falcon Flyer barely manages to escape the Subspace blast of the floating island.

All the Smashers are united and lead an invasion into the Subspace in order to fight the final boss, Tabuu.

Trivia

  • There's an interesting glitch with Samus. She sometimes cannot pummel attack Bowser. The animation goes normally but there's no damage at all. However, as long as Samus grapples Bowser while he is off the edge, she can cause damage to him.
  • Grapple beam lag can be reduced if you tap the control stick as if to run, then press the grab button. The beam extends and retracts much more quickly.
  • Samus never makes any verbal noises. The only sounds she makes are those of her attacks. However, she has a voice as Zero Suit Samus.
