Pokémon (Red, Blue, and Yellow) is the first installment in of the Pokémon series of role-playing video games, released for Game Boy in Japan in 1996 and North America in 1998. Set in the fantasy world of Kanto, the game's story follow the progress of the central character in his quest to capture and collect "Pocket Monsters" ("Pokémon" for short), and master battling. Pokémon is known for introducing a unique premise of coming being published in separate versions separated by the color of the cartridge. The first initial versions Red and Blue (Green in Japan). Other versions would later be introduced (Blue in Japan and Yellow), however Red and Blue are generally considered the "main" versions most commonly referred to when referencing the original game. Both versions feature the same plot and basic gameplay, but contain slight differentials in certain monster appearances-- some being more common in one version over another, and others being exclusive to a version, requiring players to trade with players with the other version in order to collect all 150 species.

Red and Blue have subsequently been remade for the Game Boy Advance as FireRed and LeafGreen. These, are generally considered "advanced" generation games, serving to allow the player to obtain all of 386 then-available Pokémon species created by the franchise.
