The Pokemon do a number of things, including attack one's opponent, change the properties of the stage, and induce status effects. SSB Poké Balls release RBY Pokemon, while SSBM Poké Balls release GSC Pokemon. The appearance of Groudon in Brawl confirms that Brawl will have RSE Pokémon, but it is still unknown if it will also include Diamond and Pearl Pokémon.
