This article is about the Pikmin as an entity, for other uses see this disambiguation page.

Pikmin (ピクミン Pikumin) are a species of creature central to the Pikmin games. They come in seven colored variants (ten counting the parasitic Bulbmin, the infected Mushroom Pikmin, and the Pale Mushroom Pikmin, which is like the Mushroom Pikmin but have an idle color and complete control over their functions.) and work under Captain Olimar's command both in the original games and in their appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Creature description[]

Pikmin are animal/plant hybrids that follow around Captain Olimar. They walk on two legs and all have a leaf that will change to a bud then bloom into a flower on the top of their heads. Each Pikmin has a specific ability, and up to one-hundred will follow Olimar.

  • Red Pikmin - High attack power, and immune to fire-based attacks and hazards. Have noses.
  • Yellow Pikmin - Flies higher than usual when thrown, thanks to its large ears. It can carry and set bombs. Is also immune to electricity. They have ears.
  • Blue Pikmin - Do not drown when underwater and is immune to water-based attacks and hazards. Also capable of rescuing other Pikmin that accidentally fall in the water. Have gills.
  • Purple Pikmin - An uncommon Pikmin both ten times as heavy and ten times as strong (while carrying objects) as other Pikmin. If thrown onto a weak foe, it will stun it. It still latches on in the Pikmin games, but in Brawl and SSB4, it simply slams them. Larger than the other Pikmin.
  • White Pikmin - Quick and light, and can dig up otherwise-invisible items from the ground. Has a poisonous body that is both immune to poison and will damage enemies if eaten. Smaller than other Pikmin and have red eyes.
  • Rock Pikmin - Their core bodies are made of a rocky material. This makes them blunt and able to break crystals, as well as survive getting crushed into the ground.
  • Winged Pikmin - Have wings on their back, which lets them fly over a number of hazards. The smallest introduced species so far.

The plant on an individual Pikmin's head indicates how developed and strong it is, affecting battling ability and running speed. In the games a fully bloomed flower meant a Pikmin was stronger and faster than a Pikmin with just a leaf on its head. Ordinarily, Pikmin leaves become Pikmin flowers if the Pikmin drink nectar, but a flower can naturally appear if Pikmin are left in the ground long enough before being plucked.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Pikmin makes a small cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the form of two trophies: one about the Pikmin themselves and one about Captain Olimar with some Pikmin. (Pikmin was released right before Melee and was helped by it in promotional purposes).

As a trophy[]

Pikmin trophy (SSBM)

Pikmin trophy.

The trophy specifically about the Pikmin is unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Pikmin
These strange beings are part plant, part animal. They spend most of their time buried in the earth, but they will befriend whoever plucks them, as evidenced by their devotion to Captain Olimar. Each Pikmin has a leaf on its head that grows into a bud and finally a flower. Like a flower, the life of a Pikmin is both fragile and beautiful. :(Pikmin, 12/01)

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Pikmin 080109b

Captain Olimar and his Pikmin.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pikmin are featured as part of Pikmin & Olimar, the playable collective of characters from the Pikmin universe. Pikmin follow around Captain Olimar after Olimar plucks them by using the Pikmin Pluck ability to pull them out of the ground. Each Pikmin has a specific ability, and up to six will follow Olimar single-file.

  • Red Pikmin - High attack power. Does fire damage. Immune to fire (and subsequently explosions).
  • Yellow Pikmin - Range of attack slightly larger than usual; easy to hit enemies with. Travel in slight arcs when thrown. Does electrical damage. Immune to electricity.
  • Blue Pikmin - Strong when thrown. Slightly more durable than average. Immune to water. The only Pikmin that can swim.
  • Purple Pikmin - Doesn’t fly far when thrown; bad range on smash attacks. Slow. High attack power. Slams into enemies instead of latching on when thrown. About twice as much health as other Pikmin.
  • White Pikmin - Quick and light. When latched onto opponent, does three times as much damage compared to other Pikmin. Less health than average Pikmin; can easily be killed in one hit.

The flowers on the Pikmin's head are shown in all forms of development. In the Pikmin games a fully bloomed flower meant a Pikmin was stronger and faster than a Pikmin with just a leaf on its head. In Brawl, Pikmin develop every twenty seconds per maturity stage. This seems to boost their knockback ability and durability. (It slightly boosts damage.)

Trophy Info[]

Red Pikmin[]

Red Pikmin Trophy

Red Pikmin trophy

A type of Pikmin--which are odd beings who grow like plants yet are as mobile as animals. Red ones are heat and fire resistant and are strong attackers, which makes them valuable when facing dangerous foes. Purple Pikmin are also tough fighters, but since it's difficult to increase their numbers, red Pikmin are easier to manage. Red Pikmin have distinct pointed noses.

Blue Pikmin[]

Blue Pikmin Trophy

Blue Pikmin trophy

A type of Pikmin, which are curious creatures that follow and obey the person who picks them. If you take advantage of this trait, you can get them to help Capt. Olimar and Louie. The blue Pikmin are at home in water and cannot drown. Need to retrieve an object underwater or cross a water hazard to disarm a trap? Blue Pikmin are just the allies you need.
  • Pikmin (2001)
  • Pikmin 2 (2004)

Yellow Pikmin[]

Yellow Pikmin Trophy

Yellow Pikmin trophy

A type of Pikmin. Take a nutrient-rich pellet to a flying saucer known as an Onion, and it will produce the mysterious beings known as Pikmin. Yellow ones fly higher than other Pikmin when tossed by Olimar or Louie. Unlike other Pikmin, they're also highly resistant to electricity, which makes them invaluable when battling enemies like anode dweevils.
  • Pikmin (2001)
  • Pikmin 2 (2004)

White Pikmin[]

White Pikmin Trophy

White Pikmin trophy

A type of Pikmin. White Pikmin are resistant to poisons and are themselves toxic to creatures that eat them. Their low weight makes them very speedy, and they can also dig up buried items. White and purple Pikmin do not live inside Onions, so you must change other Pikmin into them by tossing them into ivory candypop buds and violet candypop buds.
  • Pikmin 2 (2004)

Purple Pikmin[]

Purple Pikmin Trophy

Purple Pikmin trophy

A type of Pikmin, much heavier and slower than other Pikmin. When thrown, they impact with such force that they may kill or stun enemies. They're also incredibly strong--one of them can carry an item that normally would require ten Pikmin. While they're more powerful fighters than their red cousins, their slow speed hampers their effectiveness.
  • Pikmin 2 (2004)

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]

Olimar still uses the five Pikmin types as of Pikmin 2 in Smash for 3DS & Wii U, but can only have three out at a time. The Winged Pikmin from Pikmin 3 are used in Olimar's new up special move where they pick Olimar up and fly him around. Rock Pikmin do not appear at all in Olimar's moveset, although they were planed to be included during development.

Trophy descriptions[]

Red Pikmin[]

This Pikmin has a red body and a long, pointy nose. It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them.

Blue Pikmin[]

This blue Pikmin walks around with its mouth ajar. At home in the water, they're very helpful when objects are submerged and need retrieving. In Smash Bros., blue Pikmin have defense second only to purple Pikmin. They are also able to do more damage when thrown, so don't be shy about hurling them at foes.

  • NGC - Pikmin (12/2001)
  • NGC - Pikmin 2 (08/2004)

Yellow Pikmin[]

This yellow Pikmin is sporting some pointy things on its head. Maybe those are ears? Hmm... Anyway, yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and are the lightest Pikmin in the Pikmin series. In Smash Bros., a thrown yellow Pikmin will fly through the air in a nice curve, zapping anyone it comes in contact with.

  • NGC - Pikmin (12/2001)
  • NGC - Pikmin 2 (08/2004)

White Pikmin[]

These tiny, white Pikmin have bright-red eyes. They are the fastest of the Pikmin, perfect for finding and retrieving hidden treasure. In Smash Bros., you can use them to poison your enemies. Since they can fly the farthest of any Pikmin when thrown, use them to poison enemies from afar.

  • NGC - Pikmin 2 (08/2004)
  • Wii U - Pikmin 3 (08/2013)

Purple Pikmin[]

These purple Pikmin are the strongest, but they're also slower and heavier. In Pikmin, they can be thrown at animals to stun them! In Smash Bros., they're great for attacking and launching, but they've got a pretty short reach. Get in close to your foe to make these little ones truly effective!

  • Wii U - Pikmin 3 (08/2013)

Winged Pikmin[]

These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down.

  • Wii U - Pikmin 3 (08/2013)

Rock Pikmin[]

These Pikmin are made of solid rock, so they can stand up to a lot of attacks and won't get hurt when they get stepped on. They specialize in body blows, dealing a lot of damage when thrown, and they can also break right through glass and crystal. They can't latch on to other creatures, though. But that's OK--nobody's perfect!

Trivia[]

  • The idea of controlling different characters at once could have came from the tactics of Mario 128, a cancelled game that would've let you control 128 Marios at once.
