This article is about Peach's appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. For other uses, see Princess Peach.

Peach (ピーチ, Pīchi) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. She was confirmed on September 12th, 2013, the day before the 28th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., the landmark NES game in which she debuted in. She is among the first wave of compatible amiibo figures.

Peach currently ranks 20th on the tier list, which is due to her very strong air game, as she is the only character capable of floating; her floating ability allows her to quickly alter the neutral game as she can shift quickly from using ground attacks to aerials. She also has disjointed hitboxes, high-priority attacks, and a versatile Down Special. However, she is light and slow, and other characters are capable of gimping and nullifying her strengths.

Attributes[]

Strengths[]

  • Slow air speed and falling speed, which greatly compliments her combo game and also aids her recovery.
  • Can float, being the only character in the game capable of doing so.
  • Can float cancel, allowing her to effectively use aerial moves at ground height.
  • Great aerial combat, with many combos and setups.
  • All variations of her Forward Smash have disjointed hitboxes.
  • Great horizontal recovery with Peach Bomber and her floating.
  • Has a Counterattack, called Toad.
  • Peach Parasol has a lot of priority and disjointed hitboxes, making her safe against many Meteor Smashes.
  • Peach's Parasol can also K.O opponents during the jumping animation or after Peach closes her Parasol and re-opens it very quickly, but this requires for the opponent to be above Peach (while airborne) and take enough damage.
  • Vegetables is a great tool for combos and gimping.
  • It also has a small chance of pulling Stitch Faces, Bob-ombs, and Mr. Saturns, working even if items are turned off.

Weaknesses[]

  • Very light character, being easily KO'ed.
  • Slow movement speed gives her trouble against faster characters.
  • Has problems with approaching, as her only projectile is her Vegetables.
  • Lack of Meteor Smash doesn't give her many options against opponents with high recovery.
  • Her recovery can be easily gimped, and her vertical recovery is somewhat low.
  • Vegetables can be picked up by opponents and thrown back at Peach.
  • Can't deal well against opponents with disjointed hitboxes capable of outranging her.
  • Has a high learning curve, thus being unpopular in competitive play.

Summary[]

Kuroham-peach

Peach's stats by Kurogane Hammer.

Peach is a character based on Mix-Up combos, as well Heavy Pressure on opponents with her versatile moveset. She has slow dash, aerial speed and falling speed, however these are traits often favorable in her favor, since she has a huge amount of follow up options and combos at her disposal.

Peach is the only character in the game capable of floating, done by holding the jump button during a jump or double jump. Doing so will allow Peach to hover in the air for a few seconds, where she can move forward or backwards horizontally. In this state she can input any of her aerials while maintaining the float (as long the button is still held); however doing so will decrease her float time slightly. Floating greatly improves Peach's recovery, approaches and gimping capabilities. Peach can also perform a technique called float cancel, where her jump is cancelled into a float right before using, in essence keeping her at ground height. This is very useful to land aerial attacks without having to actually jump. This is also a good keep-away strategy, as she can use her aerials while retreating, being hard to punish.

One of Peach's best combo starters is her Down Throw, which can follow up into many of her moves, such as Up Tilt, Neutral Air, and Up Air Attack. While they stop effectively being guaranteed above mid-high percentages, Peach can bait opponents into air dodges and punish accordingly. While her Tilts are quite laggy, her Down Tilt is another formidable combo starter as it ground bounces opponents directly up. All her aerials have great utility, with Forward and Back Aerials being excellent finishers, Down and Up Air Attack being great combo tools and Neutral Air Attack being a great spacing option.

As for KO options, her Forward Air Attack is by far her best KO move, though her Up and Down Smash Attack are quite powerful as well, with the later being perfect to catch opponents side rolling behind her. Peach Parasol can also score KO's near the blast line. She can effectively gimp opponents by chasing them with float and attacking, with Neutral and Forward Aerials being the best attacks to do so.

Her Special Moves are quite versatile as well, though not being the core of her gameplay. Toad is a good surprise counter with high range; Peach Bomber aids her recovery and is a good follow up finisher to her combos; Peach Parasol has high priority and allows Peach to slowly descend while recovering, which can be cancelled, leaving her in a helpless state, but can be re-activated by pressing up again; and finally, Vegetables grants her thrown items, and have a chance to spawn the powerful Bob-omb or the shield-breaker Mr. Saturn.

Peach's flaws, however, lies in her slow movement, which, combined with her light weight (being a bit heavier than Zelda) makes her a character easy to KO. Much like Mario and Luigi, Peach suffers from problems against faster characters and/or opponents with disjointed hitboxes, making her approach very hard. Despite having a very long horizontal recovery and Peach Parasol having high priority, the later has quite slow startup, being easy to punish if opponents see it coming.

Overall, Peach has a considerable high learning curve, and players must learn to bait opponents into her combos, while maintaining a safe distance between opponents using Vegetables to control part of the stage.

Changes from Brawl[]

Peach has received many buffs to compensate her lack of power in Brawl, improving both her ground and air game. Her dash attack, forward aerial, and back throw have increased knockback, and her new up aerial allows her to approach safer. Peach is more difficult to juggle due to a better air dodge and faster falling speed. To compensate for knockback however, her attacks deal less damage, and is significantly slower. Peach Bomber, though it has less start-up lag, compensates with more ending lag and less power, and Vegetable takes longer to use, which weakens her projectile game.

Appearance-wise, her dress is now slightly larger at the bottom and is more detailed, giving Peach a more graceful silhouette. Much like other characters, her head is smaller compared to the rest of her body. She also has more aesthetic changes in both design and moves, with refined animations. She has more visual effects for many moves, with additions of hearts, rainbows and sparkles. Additionally, her dash animation is also slightly different, based on her running from Super Mario 3D World, with Peach running more upright while holding her dress. To indicate when Peach is floating, sparkles appear at the bottom of her dress. Peach now has the underside of her dress darkened to censored her undergarments that were pervious visible in Melee and Brawl.

Attributes[]

  • Slightly lighter than in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • Faster dash and air speed.
  • Slightly higher falling speed.
  • Air dodge has more frames of invincibility.
  • Second jump has increased height, being almost as high as in Melee.

Ground Attacks[]

  • Both hits of Standard Attack deal less damage and have slightly lower range. However, the ending lag of the first hit is slightly lower.
  • Forward Tilt is faster and deal increased hitstun and knockback. However, deals less damage.
  • Down Tilt is faster, sends opponents at a more vertical angle, and deals increased hitstun and knockback. However, deals less damage.
  • Up Tilt's heart is larger, but has a smaller blast radius, with the sweetspot now being closer to Peach's body as opposed to her hand. It deals less damage and knockback on both sweetspot and sourspot.
  • Side Smash Attack has a different charging animation. It has more range and deals more damage with all weapons. The rotation is now fixed, being tennis racket, golf club and frying pan. The Tennis Racket has the highest launching power, Golf Club with the longest range, and the Frying Pan dealing the most damage.
  • Up Smash Attack now produces a pink ribbon which envelops Peach's body, covering more horizontal range, allowing her to hit enemies by her side more easily. Its sweetspot and sourspot deal more damage and knockback.
  • Down Smash Attack deals 5 hits instead of 4, with a stronger knockback and traps opponents into it, much like in Melee. However, it deals less damage overall and has higher ending lag.
  • Dash Attack's second hit deals more damage and has higher knockback growth. It also produces a spark, with a larger hitbox.

Air Attacks[]

  • Neutral Air Attack deals increased knockback and has higher growth, as well larger hitboxes that allows Peach to hit enemies behind her. However, it has less active frames and deals much less damage.
  • Forward Air Attack deals more knockback and has larger hitboxes, allowing Peach to hit enemies above and below her more effectively. However, it has higher ending lag.
  • Back Air Attack deals more knockback, but less damage. It also has slightly higher range.
  • Down Air Attack traps opponents better between hits and has slightly higher range. It also deals increased knockback on the last hit, however deals less damage overall.
  • Up Air Attack now has a new animation, with Peach waving her hand upwards in an arc, forming a rainbow. Looks similar to Zelda's Up Air Attack, but is multi-hit. It's slower and causes much less knockback, but has higher range and longer hitboxes, with higher active frames.

Grabs and Throws[]

  • Grab and Dash Grab have slightly more range.
  • All Throws deal increased knockback, most notably Backward Throw, now being her strongest.
  • Down Throw deals more damage and a more favorable angle for follow ups.
  • Up Throw deals little knockback at the start, but can lead into lots of combos. At higher percentages, this move can also KO opponents. Peach uses both of her hands for this move.

Special Attacks[]

  • Standard Special: Toad's spores traps opponents more easily and also deal more damage and knockback at closer range. Peach will also turn around if she is hit from behind during the counter. KO's opponents at higher percentages, but it's more effective off-stage.
  • Side Special: Peach Bomber covers more range and it is much faster. Additionally, its explosion now triggers against shields, dealing more shield damage. However, it deals less damage and has more ending lag.
  • Up Special: Peach Parasol is faster and covers more vertical height. It also traps opponents more easily between hits and has more priority, with magical sparks as Peach hits opponents. However, the last hit deals less knockback. Can KO near the upper blast-line.
  • Down Special: Vegetables take longer to be plucked. Also, the chances of pulling the "stitchface" turnip, Bob-omb and Mr. Saturn have been increased. However, the "stichface" turnip deals much less knockback and damage. Beam Sword can no longer be plucked.
  • Final Smash: Peach Blossom can now put airborne enemies to sleep, but at decreased range and the sleep effect lasts less time, although the sleep duration is longer the closer enemies are to her. However, enemies take higher knockback while sleeping. Additionally, instead of summoning a huge number of small peaches that heal 5% damage each or 5 HP (in Stamina Mode), only three large fruits will spawn, that heal 20% damage and/or 20 HP each. It's also shows different illustrations of Peach on the frame. However, if any opponent is making recoveries then this move can KO opponents if they're far enough away (depending on the stage) due to this Final Smash creating a "sleepiness" effect. Some moves can prevent this from happening.

In Competitive Play[]

Since the game's release, expectations of Peach have been those of a mid-tier, and often a high-tiered character. Players noted her steep learning curve made her a situational choice for competitive play, though others also cited her improvements since Brawl and how her playstyle was very rewarding once she was mastered to her fullest. The changes to shield mechanics were also beneficial to her as they significantly improved her pressure game. As a result, and due to hardly any nerfs she got in game updates, she has always been seen as a viable, if hard to master, choice for competitive play. Despite her learning curve giving her a noticeably below average playerbase, smashers like Kie, SlayerZ, Samsora and Umeki have been able to demonstrate her capabilities in tournaments at a major degree. This led to Peach being placed at 19th in the first 4BR tier list.

Peach's results, however, while consistent, have never been as numerous as other characters ranked above her, and eventually, other characters ranked below her, causing expectations of her to slowly drop. This was further compounded by the worsening of her infinite combo (the "Umeki Rainbow"). Because of this, she dropped on the second tier list at 26th. She then saw a moderate rise to 21st on the third tier list, and finally to 20th on the fourth and current tier list. Regardless, while her mixed perception within the community has improved for the better, and she continues to gain rather strong results, it is unknown how her tier placement will fare in the long run due to the scarcity of these results.

Peach[]

Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach continues to prove that "powerful" and "cute" are not mutually exclusive. In Smash Bros., Peach uses her dress to float above the fray, suddenly descending and attacking with numerous weapons. A frying pan? An umbrella? TOAD?! Where does she keep it all?

NES - Super Mario Bros. (10/1985)

Nintendo DS - Super Princess Peach (02/2006)

Peach (Alt.)[]

Peach may be a princess, but that doesn't mean she shies away from an honest day's work. Her down special Vegetable is basically farm labor, and the fruits...er, vegetables of her work can be thrown. An angry-looking vegetable will do extra damage, too! She can also pull up Bob-ombs, or even a Mr. Saturn!

Baby Peach[]

Princess Peach is cute to begin with, and she only gets cuter as a baby. Unlike Princess Peach, Baby Peach is more fond of her pink binky than of conversation. Despite this lack of communication, she makes for a great partner in sporting events!

Peach + Birthday Girl[]

Princess Peach, where are you off to with that pink parasol? A day at the beach? More like a day at the races! Her tough and unconventional karts are ready, and she wants to take the checkered flag. Expect to see Peach win and be elegant at the same time.

Peach (Tennis Outfit)[]

Peach brings an elegance and grace to tennis that her opponents are hard-pressed to match. Her skills with a racket can put the ball right where she wants it. How she and Baby Peach can play against each other without destroying space-time is the real question.

Paper Peach[]

Usually the Sticker Fest, sponsored by Princess Peach, is held without a problem. However, one year Bowser shows up to steal the Royal Stickers and ends up peeling off with Princess Peach! With your help Mario must set out to stick things back in their proper place!

Trivia[]

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, when first launched, a bug existed wherein using Peach's Vegetable move in For Glory mode would rarely trigger an automatic ban for "dishonest play". The glitch caused players using Peach to pull only Bob-ombs instead of Turnips. Nintendo acknowledged the glitch and released an update that fixed this issue.
  • Peach has four idle animations, the most out of any character in the game.
  • Peach is the only character in the game who can't use her Down special in mid-air.
  • Smash 4 marks the final appearance of Peach’s alternate costume based on Princess Daisy to date, as Daisy herself would be playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    • This game also marks the last appearance of Peach as a starter character, as she would be unlockable in the next installment.
