Princess Peach (ピーチ姫 Pīchi-Hime?), also known as Princess Toadstool, or just Peach, is a character from the Super Mario universe, and is usually seen as Mario's damsel in distress. As her name suggests, she is the princess and ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. In 1985, Peach was known as "Princess Toadstool" outside of Japan, and she has been known as "Princess Peach" since Yoshi's Safari & Super Mario 64.

Peach's artwork differences between Super Smash Bros. Melee, Brawl, and for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U.

Princess Peach has been a mainstream Mario character since her first appearance in Super Mario Bros., in which Mario had to rescue her from the clutches of the evil Koopa King Bowser. She usually takes on the role of the damsel in distress, although she has been known to help out Mario on some occasions. For example, in Super Princess Peach, it was her turn to save Mario, Luigi and Toad from Bowser. Another well-known case was when she was the last member to join Mario's party in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars to help him retrieve the seven Star Pieces and defeat Smithy; she was also noted for being the only party member with a group healing skill as well as a revival spell, making her incredibly valuable as an ally. Her first playable appearance, however, was in Super Mario Bros. 2 where she had to help save the dream land called Subcon along with Mario, Luigi and Toad. She is also known to be Mario's love interest. She has also appeared in Mario spin-offs such as Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf. Peach also had a starring role in Super Mario 3D World as a playable character, where she, along with the Mario Bros. and Toad, travel to the Sprixie Kingdom to try and save the Sprixie Princesses from Bowser, who took over their kingdom.

Much like Bowser, Peach has shown certain defining character traits depending on the game and adaptation. While many mainstream adaptations do not depict Peach with prominent character traits, some games such as Super Mario 64 and the RPG spinoffs depict her as a wise ruler and the voice of reason among Mario's companions. Super Mario Odyssey, in fact, depicts Peach as an independent-minded and adventurous woman by having her defy the common trope of her and Mario sharing a romantic ending, as she chooses to go on adventures and see the world after her rescue rather than accept Mario's (or Bowser's) marriage proposal. Peach often shows a playful side, much like Mario himself, and the Super Smash Bros. series builds on this by depicting her as flirtatious and "sassy" in her taunts and victory poses, finding amusement in battle and victory.

In Super Mario 64 and the English version of Mario Kart 64, Peach was voiced by now-former Nintendo of America localizer Leslie Swan, and in the Japanese version of the latter game and the first two Mario Party games, Asako Kozuki voiced Peach. Starting with Mario Golf, Jen Taylor voiced Peach in majority of Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube titles, including Super Smash Bros. Melee. After Nicole Mills temporarily replaced Taylor in 2005, as well as a brief return of Leslie Swan in Super Paper Mario, Samantha Kelly portrayed Peach in Mario Strikers Charged, alongside recycled voice clips from Super Mario Strikers by Mills. Although some of Taylor's voice clips are used in later few games, Kelly has fully replaced the former as the voice actress of Peach as of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

In Super Smash Bros.[]

While Peach is briefly mentioned in Mario's biography, and one of the stages is Peach's Castle, she physically does not appear in the game in any capacity. A popular rumor claims she was planned to be playable in the game along with Bowser, King Dedede, Mewtwo, Marth, and many other characters, before being cut for space/time constraints. However, unlike the aforementioned four characters, no definitive official source has ever been found that proves Peach was ever planned to be included as a playable character.

In an official poll held on Smabura-Ken (the game's official Japanese website) regarding characters for a potential sequel, Peach placed second with 66 votes, just below Bowser (169 votes).

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

As a playable character[]

Peachmeleeclear

Peach appears as one of the fifteen default characters available in Melee. She is based on her early appearance from the Nintendo 64 era, notably Super Mario 64, but her dress has been given slightly more detail. Her neutral special Toad is a counterattack, her side special Peach Bomber is a butt bash that can produce a fiery explosion and can also be used repeatedly in the air, her up special Peach Parasol is a recovery move that allows for a slow descent after it is used, and her down special Vegetable has Peach pull out a turnip, with its facial expression denoting its power. The turnip's power is determined at random, and Peach even has a chance to pluck a Bob-omb or a Mr. Saturn from the ground. Peach can also briefly float in the air by holding the jump button down. Peach is considered by professional players to be amongst the best characters in the game and is fifth place in the current tier list. Peach is also quite famous for her floating and vegetable plucking powers, hailing from the game Super Mario Bros. 2.

Trophies[]

As a playable character, Peach has three trophies, each available by defeating Classic Mode, Adventure and All-Star modes. Her three collectable trophies reads as follows:

Peach

Princess Peach presides over the Mushroom Kingdom from her huge castle. Her loyal subject Toad does his best to protect her but always seems to fail spectacularly. Besides her royal duties, Peach is interested in both tennis and golf; since she's so magnanimous, she'll even deign to play a few matches with the evil Bowser.

Peach's ability to float is invaluable in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as she can return from incredible distances. Balancing this talent, though, is the fact that she's quite light and can be sent flying with a single powerful attack. Her attacks are fairly weak, so you'll have to hang around to win.
Peach [Smash]

Peach's Smash A attack will set her swinging with either a frying pan, tennis racket, or golf club. These bludgeoning devices appear randomly and have different reaches and power levels. The princess uses Toad to absorb attacks, and he counters by sending spores out at attackers. Don't worry about the little guy, though; he takes his job seriously.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

As a playable character[]

Peach Clear SSBB

Peach returns as a veteran to Brawl. She is now based on her recent appearance with the two panniers since Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Party 4, but her dress is slightly more detailed, much like in Melee. Her moves have been virtually unchanged from Melee, with a few minor enhancements and/or nerfs. Her Final Smash attack, Peach Blossom, involves her lulling all grounded opponents to sleep and deals damage as well. Samantha Kelly, her voice actress at the time of the release of Brawl, now voices Peach.

Peach suffered quite a large nerf from Melee to Brawl, but is still ranked average, at 19th place on the tier list in C- tier.

Trophies[]

Additionally, Peach appears as multiple trophies in the game:

Peach-Trophy-SSBB
Peach
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Her long blond hair is a perfect match for her pink dress. Regardless of the number of Toad retainers she has, she's often kidnapped by Bowser. Though she's usually the damsel in distress, she got a starring role in Super Princess Peach, where it was her turn to rescue Mario and Luigi.

Paper Peach
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. With her sparkling crown and gorgeous blond hair, Peach always looks the part, even when flat as paper. Count Bleck kidnaps the princess and tries to force her to marry Bowser. While jumping, Peach can use a special umbrella technique that allows her to float down gently or reach otherwise inaccessible places.
  • (Wii) Super Paper Mario
Wedding Peach
Wedding-Peach-Trophy-SSBB
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom adorned in a pure white wedding dress rather than her usual pink one. Peach also has her long blond hair drawn up in a ponytail. And who might she be marrying? Bowser of all people, who was also forced into the marriage by the scandalous Count Bleck. Brainwashed by Nastasia, Peach is even forced into giving her vows.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U[]

As a playable character[]

Peach SSB4

Peach was confirmed to be playable in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U on September 12th, 2013, one day before the 28th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., and is the third female character to be announced after Samus and Wii Fit Trainer. Aesthetically, some of her attacks now have new visual effects, such as a ribbon swirling around her during her up smash. Like Mario, Luigi and Bowser, her design is based on her appearance from recent Mario games such as Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8, although her dress has been made more stylized, much like in the last two Smash Bros. games. Peach was buffed overall in the transition from Brawl to 3DS/Wii U. Her ground game has been improved thanks to stronger smash attacks and a faster Peach Bomber. Her forward aerial, dash attack, and back throw were also given more knockback, granting better KO options. However, her Vegetable special was moderately nerfed, as they take longer to pluck, weakening her projectile game. Her slow movement speed also gives her a disadvantage against fast characters, and her light weight and floatiness makes her easy to launch. Nonetheless, Peach ranks 20th out of 55 on the tier list, at the bottom of the B tier. While viewed as a solid pick for competitive play, she lacks noteworthy tournament results to speak of, even with her few dedicated players. A Peach wig is also available as a headgear for all Mii Fighter types.

Trophies[]

Peach
PeachTrophyWiiU
Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach continues to prove that "powerful" and "cute" are not mutually exclusive. In Smash Bros., Peach uses her dress to float above the fray, suddenly descending and attacking with numerous weapons. A frying pan? Umbrella? TOAD?! Where does she keep it all?

Peach (Alt.)

Peach may be a princess, but that doesn't mean she shies away from an honest day's work. Her down special Vegetable is basically farm labor, and the fruits...er, vegetables of her work can be thrown. An angry-looking vegetable will do extra damage, too! She can also pull up Bob-ombs, or even a Mr. Saturn!

Baby Peach

Princess Peach is cute to begin with, and she only gets cuter as a baby. Unlike Princess Peach, Baby Peach is more fond of her pink binky than of conversation. Despite this lack of communication, she makes for a great partner in sporting events!
Peach + Birthday Girl
Peach+BirthdayGirl
Princess Peach, where are you off to with that pink parasol? A day at the beach? More like a day at the races! Her tough and unconventional karts are ready, and she wants to take the checkered flag. Expect to see Peach win and be elegant at the same time.
Peach (Tennis Outfit)
PeachMarioTennisTrophy3DS
Peach brings an elegance and grace to tennis that her opponents are hard- pressed to match. Her skills with a racket can put the ball right where she wants it. How she and Baby Peach can play against each other without destroying space-time is the real question.
Paper Peach

Usually the Sticker Fest, sponsored by Princess Peach, is held without a problem. However, one year Bowser shows up to steal the Royal Stickers and ends up peeling off with Princess Peach! With your help, Mario must set out to stick things back in their proper place!
Peach (Baseball)
PeachBaseballTrophyWiiU
The thought of yet another kidnapping is never far from Peach's mind, but in Mario Super Sluggers, she gets a nice break to just focus on the game. As the leader of the Peach Monarchs, she shows off her skills with her Star Swing, Heart Swing, drawing a heart in the air to distract the fielders.

You may think it doesn't look like a racer. You may think it would look more at home on a carousel. But Peach will have the last laugh as she sails past the finish line, leaving you in the dust. The Daytripper's great handling lets it breeze through even the trickiest of courses--and what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in acceleration.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

As a playable character[]

Peach SSBU

Peach is confirmed to be playable once again in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, only this time she is an unlockable character. She is classified as fighter #13. Her Echo Fighter, Daisy, also debuts in this game.

Trivia[]

Smallwikipedialogo
The English Wikipedia has an article on Princess Peach. Based on the article's quality, it can or can not be used to improve this article.
  • Peach was originally intended to be playable in the original Super Smash Bros, but was cut due to time constraints. That is, as were Bowser, Mewtwo, King Dedede, Pit, and Meowth (the last of which has not been playable at all thus far).
  • In all of her Super Smash Bros. appearances, Peach is depicted with a ring on her middle finger. However, the ring is absent in most other games.
  • Peach seems to be of unusually high importance in the Subspace Emissary, as she appears to be focused in on in several cut scenes. She gives characters positivity, like when she prevents a battle between Sheik and Fox. Then, the posh and elegant royal that she is, she offers them both a cup of tea.
  • Despite being the "damsel in distress" character in the Mario series, Peach is ranked significantly higher than Mario in both Melee and Brawl.
  • Nintendo has confirmed that Princess Peach's genus is Homo Nintendonus, meaning that she, along with Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Princess Daisy, and Rosalina, is technically not human.
  • Peach’s dress is more elaborately designed in the Smash series than in her mainstream appearances.
  • In all Super Smash Bros. installments, Peach is more anatomically realistic than she is in the Mario series of games. Her head is a bit smaller and she is slightly taller than she normally is in the Mario series. This contrast can be seen when viewing her three trophies in Melee, her trophies and stickers in Brawl, Classic Mode trophies and her regular trophies from the Mario series (or their real-life amiibo equivalents) in 3DS/Wii U, as well as the two versions of her Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.
  • Peach is the second oldest playable female character in the Super Smash Bros. series after Nana (having debuted about 7 months earlier), having debuted in September 1985 (Princess Zelda would debut in Japan 5 months later).
  • Peach and Samus Aran are the only female characters to have a clone.
  • Peach is the only Mario character to have a voice change between installments, switching from Jen Taylor to Samantha Kelly in Brawl.
