This article is about Pac-Man's appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. For other uses, see Pac-Man.

Pac-Man (パックマン Pakkuman?) is the main character from Namco's eponymous series. He is the fourth non-Nintendo character to appear in the series, following Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man. He is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U.

Attributes

Strengths

  • Low startup and ending lag on various attacks.
  • Great poking attacks, useful for interrupting enemies, making him unpredictable.
  • Quite agile on both air and ground.
  • Bonus Fruit can make his ranged approaches unpredictable.
  • Fire Hydrant is a great trap-move, constantly pushing enemies, being also very effective for edge-guarding. Pac-Man can also attack the Hydrant, launching it at his opponents.
  • Versatile recovering.
  • Can crawl.
  • All the Ghosts that appear in his Smash Attacks count as disjointed hitboxes.

Weaknesses

  • Enemies can attack Fire Hydrant and launch it back at Pac-Man, causing damage to him.
  • Enemies can grab his Bonus Fruits and use against him.
  • All Smash attacks have considerable high startup lag.
  • His Final Smash relatively easy to dodge.

Summary

In a way, some of Pac-Man animations look a bit similar to Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario and Olimar's. Many of his punches and kicks slightly resembles Mario's (Up Tilt notably resembles a faster version of Mario Up Smash), while his Smash Attacks are similar to Olimar's.

Overall, Pac-Man is a agile character, being capable to attack fast and lay traps with his Bonus Fruit and Fire Hydrant. His Down Tilt is notably fast, being a very powerful surprise attack with very little ending lag, while his Smash Attacks can both attack and protect him from opponents.

Moveset

Ground Attacks

Normal

  • Neutral Attack: Throws a slow punch.
  • Neutral Combo: Hits one time with his left hand, then the right hand, and ends with a flip kick.
  • Dash Attack: Turns into his classic form and rushes forward, repeatedly biting.
  • Side Tilt: Does a kick.
  • Up Tilt: Does a headbutt. Looks similar to Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario's Up Smash.
  • Down Tilt: Turns into his classic form and goes forward a short distance.

Smash Attacks

  • Side Smash - He sends out an 8-Bit version of Blinky.
  • Up Smash - He sends up an 8-Bit version of Inky.

Other Attacks

To be added

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial: Turns into his classic form and spins around.
  • Forward Aerial: Does a kick.
  • Back Aerial: Kicks backwards with both feet. Looks similar to Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario's Back Aerial in Melee.
  • Up Aerial: Flips over and sweeps his feet upwards. Looks similar to Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario's Up Aerial. Could also be based on the flipkick, a move Pac-Man could perform in the Pac-Man World series.
  • Down Aerial: Repeatedly kicks downward. Looks similar to Lucas' Down Aerial.

Grabs and Throws

  • Pummel: Throws himself at the opponent and hits them with his head.

Trivia

  • He is the second-oldest in all Super Smash Bros. history (Mr. Game and Watch is older by just less than a month).
  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U marks the second time Pac-Man has appeared in a crossover fighting game with Mega Man (or a variation of Mega Man). The first time was the PlayStation version of Street Fighter X Tekken.
    • It also marks the the fourth time Pac-Man has appeared in a crossover game with Mario, the first three being the Mario Kart Arcade GP series.
  • There are "765" references (with a zero) throughout the game: the score during Pac-Man's final Smash, the score sign in one of the victory animations, and an Event Match title. "765" (read: seven-six-five) is a goroawase number which reads in Japanese as "na-mu-ko" (Namco)
  • Pac-Man is the fourth third-party character in the Super Smash Bros. series, right behind Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man.
  • His character design is based on his second design rather than the recent Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures design. Sakurai was considering to cut Pac-Man from the roster if Namco made him use his recent design.
  • Pac-Man is the one of the only two characters who doesn't have the color green in his palette swap options, the other being Shulk.
  • Pac-Man can perform a "trick" when paired with another Pac-Man that involves both using their Up Special, Pac-Jump, to ascend using the trampolines until they reach past the upper blast line. This is similar to the Luigi Ladder, however they won't be KO'ed since the move doesn't cause damage. However, they will be constantly taking damage from being past the blast zones.
  • Pac-Man smiles when he drowns.
  • Pac-Man is the first character in the Super Smash Bros. series to be "Teased". During Greninja's reveal trailer, after it uses hydro-pump to jump off to tree branch it was standing on, a cloud shaped like Pac-Man is visible in the upper section of the screen.
  • Smash Bros. marks the the second time Pac-Man and Ryu fought together (after Street Fighter X Tekken).
    • Sonic and Pac-man, so far, were the only third party characters to have 2 different stages; Green Hill Zone, Windy Hill Zone and Pac-Maze, Pac-Land.
