The POW Block is a throwing item in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. When thrown, it creates a shockwave that knocks fighters upwards.

Overview

The quake created by the POW Block deals 10% damage and vertical knockback to grounded opponents. The quake can be created by throwing the block directly into the ground, thrown into opponents, or triggered by projectiles. The POW Block can be used up to three times, with the POW Block shrinking for each successive use. If dropped, the POW Block does not activate.

The POW Block is a potent item against grounded opponents, as the quake knocking them upward can help chain into aerial attacks or juggle opponents. Because the POW Block activates when hit by a projectile, this makes it possible to intercept a thrown POW Block with a projectile, which will affect the thrower instead.

Trophy Description

POWTrophy3DS

This special block first appeared way back in Mario Bros. Hitting it will send enemies flying into the air. You can avoid the shock waves by shielding at the right time or jumping into the air. After being triggered three times, a POW Block will vanish into thin air--don't waste it!

  • Arcade - Mario Bros. (1983)
  • Wii - New Super Mario Bros. Wii (12/2009)

Origin

The POW Block makes its first appearance in the original Mario Bros., where it would knock grounded opponents upside down and shrink with each successive use, disappearing after being used the third time. The ability to pick up the POW Block would originate from Super Mario Bros. 2, and is retained in its appearance in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and all subsequent titles.
