Collect materials from the ground by mining the floor. Craft tools while at the crafting table or place blocks while in the air.
—Description from Ultimate's Move List.

Mine, Craft, and Create Block are Steve and Alex's three neutral specials.

Overview[]

Steve can do any of these three moves depending on the circumstances.

Mine[]

Mining can be done on the ground and away from a Crafting Table. Rapidly pressing or holding down the Special Attack button will allow Steve to continuously mine until his weapon breaks. The items they can mine for are in a set alternating order of the Block and ingot of the material they are mining for, which can depend on the stage's terrain. For example, on a stage such as Corneria, Steve can only mine for Iron on its surface, while in Kongo Jungle, only Wood can be mined for there. This rule will not apply to Omega or Battlefield forms, as the materials players mine for will be in a pre-determined rate.

Steve can mine for Dirt, Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Redstone materials. There are certain additional materials that can be mined in only specific stages - Sand (Tortimer Island and Coliseum), Wool (Super Happy Tree, Yoshi's Story, Skyworld, and Magicant), and Ice (Summit); however, these are purely aesthetical and have the same durability as Dirt. As for Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Redstone, they can be mined for regardless of surface type.

Craft[]

Once materials have been gathered, Steve can craft them with the help of a Crafting Table. It will automatically spawn by their side at the start of each match but can be summoned at will by pressing the Shield button and Special Attack button at the same time. When in front of a Crafting Table, Steve can use the materials they have gathered to craft all weapons (Sword, Axe, Pickaxe, and Shovel) at once as to build replacements for broken ones, restore their durability, or upgrade to a much higher quality material, with the most valuable being prioritized automatically (Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold, and Diamond in that order). The strength, speed, and durability of the weapon is dependent on the type of material used; for example, an Iron Sword is strong and powerful but has a slower swing, while a Gold Sword is fragile and weak but has a faster swing perfect for combos.

Crafting weapons also requires a certain amount of materials, typically four (one for each weapon). This forces players to manage their weapon and material usage.

Create Block[]

Steve can also place Blocks below them when airborne. Pressing and holding the Special button in the air will allow them to continuously place Blocks. These can be used as makeshift platforms to reach higher places, to perform grounded attacks in unusual areas, or to break their launch trajectory.

Steve will automatically use the cheapest material they have available in their Material Gauge, usually being Dirt Blocks. Once placed, the Blocks will automatically start cracking slowly before eventually breaking. The durability of the Blocks depends on the type, with Dirt being the weakest and Iron being the strongest. All Blocks can be broken by power attacks and also notably crack faster if stood on.

Blocks also have a build limit, as players cannot continuously build off-screen (they will be indicated of the limit with a pink line). Blocks also do not have a grabbable ledge, making them useful for multiple kinds of edgeguarding tactics.

Origin[]

As the title of the game suggests, Mining, Crafting, and Building serve as the core gameplay foundations of the Minecraft franchise. This is most evident in the game's Survival mode, where players must endure the weather of the biomes and fend off numerous enemies. This can be done by mining several elements (often starting with wood), allowing players to gradually gain much stronger materials to build a home with Blocks and craft stronger weapons. The Building aspect is also heavily emphasized in Creative mode, where players are granted an unlimited amount of all Block types in all kinds of colors and are encouraged to create structures, objects, cities, and/or pictures without limitation.

Trivia[]

  • If Kirby inhales Steve, he is only able to Mine and place Blocks.
    • This makes Craft the only neutral special that he cannot perform.
      • Due to not being granted a Crafting Table of his own, Kirby will be equipped with an unbreakable Iron Pickaxe.
  • If Steve is KO'd and has little to no materials in his inventory, three ingots of Iron will be added to his Material Gauge automatically. None will be added if he has 8 or more ingots after the KO.
  • Any Blocks still remaining in the area will be automatically destroyed once a Stage Morph occurs.
  • Blocks are not fully aligned with the grid lines of the Training stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being off by 0.95 meters.
  • Summit is the only stage that grants Steve Ice Blocks.
