Midna was originally the titular Twilight Princess and ruler of the Twilight Realm, until she was overthrown by Zant and transformed into an imp form by him. Afterward, she leaves the realm to collect the Fused Shadows to defeat him.
Midna is first seen when Link is turned into a wolf upon entering the Twilight Realm. An ancient legend of Midna's people, the Twili, claimed that they would be rescued by a sacred beast one day. Midna, believing Link to be that beast, decided to follow him to the dungeon where he was locked up. After teasing Link a little, Midna finally frees him from his chains and guides him along different paths before eventually revealing that they are in Hyrule Castle and that the Twilight turned him into a wolf.
Midna's character undergoes major personality changes throughout Link's journey. At first, Midna is a character who cares little about what happens in the Light World, the main world where Link lives, but Midna eventually develops a genuine concern for the well-being of both worlds. Various events bring about this change in Midna's personality, one of them being Zelda's sacrifice for Midna after being seriously injured.
After this event, Midna proceeds to help Link enter the Twilight Realm to stop Zant, who is responsible for everything that has been happening and is even the cause for making Midna look like an imp. In the battle against Zant, Midna finally manages to stop Zant with the help of a weapon called the Fused Shadows. However, Zant claims with his dying breath that as long as his master, Ganondorf, is alive, he will be reborn, so Midna decides to assist Link in the final battle against Ganondorf.
In the final battle, Midna bravely tries to protect Zelda's lifeless body, but Ganondorf manages to possess the princess's body, creating Possessed Zelda, and Midna is thrown away. After Link emerges victorious in freeing Zelda from Ganondorf's control, Midna actively participates in the battle against Ganon, using her power to slow down the villain's attacks until they manage to defeat him.
Midna is later seen restoring Zelda's life energy, awakening the princess. However, the relief is short-lived as Ganondorf reappears, and as Link prepares to confront Ganondorf, Midna stops him and teleports Link and Zelda to the Hyrule Fields while she faces the villain with the power of the Fused Shadows.
After seeing an explosion in Hyrule Castle, Ganondorf reveals himself victorious and, to the chagrin of Link and Zelda, brings in his hands the Fused Shadows. After mocking Link, Ganondorf proceeds to destroy the Fused Shadow, representing Midna's death.
Midna's true form
After Link and Zelda manage to defeat Ganondorf, the Spirits of Light appear and bring Midna back to life, also giving her her true form. Midna finally decides to return to her kingdom and, knowing that the world of light and the world of shadows have suffered greatly from Ganondorf's interference, she decides to break the only portal that connected both worlds, saying goodbye to Link in the process.
