Midgar (ミッドガル, Midgar) is a downloadable stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U that is packaged with Cloud. Midgar and Cloud were released on December 16, 2015, costing $5.99 for one version and $6.99 for both versions. It returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Stage Overview

The stage heavily resembles Battlefield in design, with a main platform and three fall-through platforms above it. During gameplay, a Summon Materia may show up (identifiable as a red glowing sphere), and anyone who gets it will be able to call a Summon Creature from the Final Fantasy series, in their Final Fantasy VII incarnations, to unleash their signature attacks; some of which disrupt and affect the positioning of the stage itself.

The summoner won't be affected by the attacks, and will have a red aura surround him/her. If an opponent is KOed by the Summon Creature or its effects, the KO will be given to the summoner. The Summon Creatures include:

  • Odin, who will attack with his sword, Zantetsuken, which can instantly kill a character and will literally slice the stage in half, with the two halves separating from each other, similarly to Brinstar.
  • Leviathan, who will attack with Tidal Wave, which will cause a massive flood and allow players to swim beside the limits of the main platform, though they will get swept off the blast lines.
  • Ramuh, who will attack with Judgement Bolt, which will electrify parts of the stage, causing damage and knocking back characters who stand on it. The electrified platforms will be moved around the stage.
  • Ifrit, who will attack with Hellfire, erupting a pillar of flames on one of the edges of the stage, throwing it off balance. The fire will also damage and launch fighters.
  • Bahamut ZERO, who will attack with Tera Flare, a breath attack from the skies with a massive laser that will randomly strike a part of the stage, causing huge damage and knockback to those caught in the blast.

Any opponent KO'd by a Summon's attack counts as a KO on behalf of the summoner.

In 8-Player Smash mode, no summoned monsters appear if there are five or more players. If the game is paused in Training Mode, all Summon effects are paused but the rest of the action keeps going.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, in Training Mode, if the player summons a Smash Ball, the Materia will go away.

Origin

Midgar is the capital city and power base of the ShinRa Electric Power Company in the world of Final Fantasy VII, and where the game's story begins. Midgar was the most technologically advanced location ever constructed on the planet of Gaia. It consists of a large circular structure supported above the ground by eight reactors and a central pillar, with various other supports around the city.

On top of the structure lies the city proper, divided into eight sectors, while underneath it on the ground lies a large slum; created by the city's unfortunate and downtrodden. It is mentioned Midgar was once eight individual towns, but as Midgar came into existence their names were forgotten in favour of referring to the different areas as sectors.

The Summon Creatures, sometimes called Eidolons or Guardians, are a reoccurring element in the Final Fantasy series since their introduction in Final Fantasy III, sometimes even playing major roles in the storyline. They are powerful creatures which can be summoned into battle to attack enemies or support the party. In Final Fantasy VII, those creatures' spirits have been condensed inside Materia, and as such can be summoned by equipping their respective Materia, which is always red. All the summons appearing on this stage are also available in Final Fantasy VII.

Midgar's name derives from Miðgarðr (Midgard), which, in Norse mythology, is the world of men, one of the nine plains that compose the universe. Midgard, along with the other worlds, were created by Odin and his two brothers, Vili and Vé, from the slain body of Ymir, king of the jötunn (frost giants) whose body sustains the city's inhabitants. Midgard translates to "middle world" or "middle earth", reflecting its status as world that is both literal and figuratively in the middle of the eight realms. During the world-ending battle, Ragnarok, Midgard will be destroyed and a new world will emerge.

Trivia

  • Midgar is the first stage in the series that originates from a game that has never been released on a Nintendo system in any form.
  • It is possible to consider that, chronologically, the set of the stage happens before the end of disc two of Final Fantasy VII, before the Sister Ray is moved from Junon and installed in Midgar in order to combat the Weapons, as the cannon is nowhere to be seen.
  • Midgar is the only stage on both versions to have the exact same songs in both versions.
    • This distinction makes it the stage with the fewest music tracks in the Wii U version, having only two.
