Mega Man Symbol

Mega Man (ロックマン Rokkuman?, Rockman in Japan) is a title character and the protagonist of the Mega Man series by Capcom. Mega Man was the 1st confirmed third-party character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Sonic was revealed at a later date. Mega Man is the third third-party character announced to join the Super Smash Bros. series after Sonic and Solid Snake.

Character Description

Megaman

Mega Man, originally named Rock, was built in the year 200X (retconned to 20XX in later games to keep his creation in the future) by Dr. Light as a helper and lab assistant. When the mad scientist Dr. Wily stole and reprogrammed Dr. Light's six next generation Robot Masters, Rock volunteered to stop Wily and was upgraded by Dr. Light for combat purposes, adopting the new name Mega Man. Mega Man's primary weapon is the Mega Buster, a transformable arm mounted energy cannon. He also possesses the Variable Weapon System, which allows Mega Man to copy a defeated Robot Master's special weapon. Using these and his strong desire to bring peace to the world, he has repeatedly thwarted Wily's plans. To date, Mega Man has appeared in over 50 games over the last 25 years. The new Super Smash Bros. in 2014 will be his first major, non-cameo game appearance since Mega Man 10 in 2010.

Despite the fact that Mega Man has had voice actors in some media such as Marvel vs. Capcom and Mega Man Powered Up, he remains silent in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U; Pac-Man shares this in common with him, likely to reference the era of gaming before voice acting was introduced and became more commonplace.

Mega Man has been confirmed by series creator Masahiro Sakurai to have only one normal melee attack, the Mega Upper. Mega Man's primary form of attack will come from his Mega Buster, a ranged weapon capable of rapid firing small bursts of energy or one large blast after a short charge period. In addition, Mega Man brings a full set of enemy Robot Master special weapons with him to the fight.

SSB and NES animation comparisons.

  • Serieswise, Megaman's significance to Nintendo was that his series was originally conceived for the Famicom by Capcom during its fledgling days. Noting the Famicom's mostly blue color palette, Keiji Inafune decided that Megaman's defining color should be blue to better suit the system's processing. As the Megaman series progressed throughout the years, his games would become a staple shining example of the run jump gun action platformer, and spawn many other significant spinoffs of the series, including X for the Super Famicom, EXE/Battle Network and Zero for the Gameboy Advance, Legends for the Nintendo 64, and Starforce for the DS.
  • Mega Man, along with Link, Pac-Man, Snake, Sonic, and Donkey Kong are the only characters to be playable in a different fighting game other than the Super Smash Bros. series. Mega Man has appeared in Mega Man: The Power Battle, Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, a few Capcom VS games (mainly the Marvel vs. Capcom series) and Street Fighter X Tekken (in his "Bad Box Art" form).
  • Other than Street Fighter X Mega Man (a fan created game that Capcom released) and Rockman Xover (an iOS game) Mega Man hasn't had a true release since 2010.
  • Mega Man has appeared on over 20 platforms.
  • Mega Man is called "Rockman" in Japan. The name, along with that of his 'sister', Roll, derives from the rock and roll music genre.
  • Many of Mega Man's basic animations in Super Smash Bros. are recreations of his animations from the NES games, such as his jumping and hurt frames.
    • In fact, when he gets knocked out, an animation of when Mega Man loses all his health plays much like the NES games.
  • Mega Man is the only third-party character in SSB to debut on a Nintendo console (Sonic was on the Sega Genesis, Snake was on the MSX and Pac-Man and Ryu were in arcades).
  • Mega Man has actually officially crossed over with some Nintendo characters before in the Captain N: The Game Master animated series and with Sonic the Hedgehog in the Archie comic series.
