Mechakoopa is Bowser Jr.'s Down Special Move. Bowser Jr. releases a Mechakoopa which walks down the stage and eventually explodes.

Overview

Bowser Jr. unleashes Mechakoopas from his Clown Car and they travel on the ground in a straight direction, turning around when they reach an edge of a platform. If they hit someone or something they will latch onto the target and damage that before exploding. They will also explode if they are on the stage for too long. The Mechakoopa can hurt Bowser Jr. and can also be thrown by both Bowser Jr. and another player. Mechakoopas can grab onto opponents through shields, making it useful against opponents that are blocking another one of Bowser Jr.'s attacks.

Custom Variations

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Mechakoopa can be customized into Impatient Mechakoopa and Big Mechakoopa.

Impatient Mechakoopa

Impatient Mechakoopa launches the Mechakoopa into the air for a fair distance. It explodes shortly after landing, but is not as powerful.

Strengths:

  • Greater range
  • Can hit opponents that are short-hopping
  • Can be difficult for Bowser Jr. to pick up and throw after dispensing it

Weaknesses:

  • Deals less damage

The Impatient Mechakoopa custom move has increased range for the Mechakoopa because it actually gets launched a great distance forwards in a low, gradual arc. This wide arc it takes allows it to hit opponents that are short-hopping as either an approach or to set up an attack. Bowser Jr. cannot pick up and throw the Mechakoopa at opponents after dispensing it because it is launched so far away and generally explodes before he could even reach it. The explosion deals less damage, though with good spacing Bowser Jr. could launch the Mechakoopa just over the edge to hit any recovering opponents.

Big Mechakoopa

Big Mechakoopa releases a large, powerful Mechakoopa. It walks past enemies and will only explode if thrown or after a set of time passes. Its explosion is much more powerful.

Strengths:

  • Increased size/hitboxes
  • Easier for Bowser Jr. to pick up due to increased size
  • Deals more damage

Weaknesses:

  • Slower
  • Decreased range
  • Easier for opponents to pick up due to size increase
  • Explodes earlier

The Big Mechakoopa only damages opponents if they are nearby when the Mechakoopa explodes or if the Mechakoopa is thrown at an opponent, though this damage is increased from the default move. Due to its increased size, it moves very slowly and doesn't go very far before exploding. Its bulky size also makes it easier for opponents to pick it up and throw it at Bowser Jr., though the same is true for Bowser Jr.

Origin

Mechakoopas are common enemies in the Mario series. They are unkillable clockwork robots who can only be broken apart for a short time before re-forming.
