41 Lucario – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

41 Lucario – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Revision as of 16:35, 25 June 2019

This article is about Lucario's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For other uses, see Lucario.
Lucario is the only fighter whose attack power increases as it takes damage. A fighter that truly shines when in a pinch, choose Lucario for a thrilling battle.
—Description from the Super Smash Blog.

Lucario is a veteran fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, first playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was confirmed to return on June 12, 2018 during E3 2018.

When unlocked, it is fought at Spear Pillar, much like Mewtwo.

Attributes

Strengths

  • Can crawl, wall jump, and wall cling.
  • Very high traction.
  • Has the unique Aura mechanic which allows Lucario to deal increased damage and knockback the higher its own percentage is and he Aura multiplier stacks with the Rage Mechanic.
  • All its attacks are aura-imbued, having some properties similar to transcending priority for some attacks such as Forward Smash.
  • Excellent edge-guarding moves.
  • Very fast pummel.
  • Powerful grab game for combos.
  • Aura Sphere is a powerful projectile capable of killing, especially when Lucario is at higher percentages. It also deals damage to opponents close to Lucario while charging it.
  • Excellent recovery thanks to its floatiness, jumps and Extreme Speed; the lattermost is greatly enhanced by the Aura.
  • Force Palm is a command grab that can also be used as a long range move should the grab fail to connect.
  • Double Team is a counter.

Weaknesses

  • Poor knockback on most moves unless Lucario is at higher percentages, meaning it has trouble killing without its Aura.
  • Relies heavily on throws in order to combo.
  • Doesn't have any kill throws outside of Force Palm.
  • Recovery is weaker at lower percentages.
  • Lacks a Meteor Smash.
  • Double Team can easily result in a suicide if used in the air, especially if Lucario is not facing the platform.

Summary

Changes from SSBWU/3DS

Aesthetics

  • Lucario's model features a more subdued color scheme. Its fur is more detailed, similar to Brawl.
  • Aura is now cyan in color instead of indigo, and its visual effects are smoother. At high aura, the flames produced are more vibrant and intense, leaving behind a trail as Lucario moves.

Attributes

  • Like all characters, Lucario's jumpsquat now takes three frames to complete.
  • Lucario's Aura is weaker in terms of racking up damage, however, its moves are stronger with little to no aura.

Ground Attacks

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial now hits twice instead of once, no matter which side Lucario hits the opponent from. Additionally, Lucario is able to drag opponents with the attack, making it more likely for follow ups.
  • Forward Aerial has reduced landing lag.
  • Back Aerial deals less damage and knockback to opponents, but it has less ending and startup lag, and has a bigger hitbox.
  • Up Aerial has an altered animation, with Lucario backflipping following the initial kick.
  • Up Aerial has increased ending lag.
  • Down Aerial has bigger hitboxes.
  • Down Aerial stalls a bit less in the air.

Grabs and Throws

Special Attacks

  • Aura Sphere has less endlag and can now be jump-canceled.
  • Aura Sphere travels slower.
  • Aura Sphere is now visually closer to how it appears in the anime and games. It has an "energy absorption" visual effect when charging and no longer emits a trail of smoke when launched.
  • Force Palm has increased grab range at point blank range, making it more likely to grab opponents with the attack.
  • Extreme Speed travels a shorter distance.
  • Extreme Speed has less ending lag and landing lag.
  • Double Team's counterattack activates faster, making the attack harder to avoid.
  • Double Team has less active frames.
  • Lucario's Final Smash has been reverted to Aura Storm, but it now transforms into Mega Lucario.
