Character Description

Little Mac (リトル・マック Ritoru Makku?) made his appearance in the game Punch-Out!!. Like his name suggests, he is a very little character. Despite his size, he entered a boxing tournament and was able to become a champion. After a long time without being heard of, he makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Recently, Little Mac appeared in the fifth installment of the Punch-Out!! series for the Wii, released one year after Brawl. Little Mac becomes a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Little Mac is an Assist Trophy character in the game. When summoned, he dashes about the stage to opponents, attacking by dealing two straight punches and an uppercut. The punches do a good amount of damage and the uppercut is devastating because it has very high power, dealing 25% damage, and knockback, and is an instant shield breaker. If at the right damage percentage, Little Mac can easily knock out opponents for the one who summoned him, but he is unreliable as he often falls off the stage. The punching sound effects from Punch-Out!! can be heard as Little Mac attacks. Little Mac receives his own trophy in the game, like all other Assist Trophies.

Trophy Description

Little Mac Trophy

A lightweight scrapper from the Bronx. After meeting with a former boxing great named Doc Louis who fell from glory, Mac takes Doc on as his coach, and together the pair try for the championship belt in the WVBA. Little Mac works his way up the ranks of the WVBA, taking out foes several times his size. By landing multiple blows, Little Mac gains a "☆" uppercut.

Main Article: Little Mac (SSBWU/3DS)

Little Mac was confirmed to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS on February 13, 2014 in a Nintendo Direct. One new feature he has is a power meter at the bottom of the screen, which when charged up, can be a one-hit KO. He will also be able to access Giga Mac (a power he has in Head-To-Head mode in Punch-Out!! for Wii) as his Final Smash. A few months after his reveal, it was also revealed that he would have an alternate costume, "Wireframe Little Mac," based on his appearance in the arcade version of Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!.

Trivia

  • Given that Punch-Out!! is itself a fighting game series, Little Mac is the first character in the Super Smash Bros. series to have originated in a fighting game. Consequently, he also belongs to a group of characters who have also appeared in another fighting game, which includes Donkey Kong (whom he previously appeared with in Punch-Out!! for the Wii), Link (Soul Calibur II), Snake, Sonic (Sonic the Fighters), Pac-Man and Mega Man.
  • Little Mac is the first Assist Trophy in Brawl to become playable in later installments.
  • According to Sakurai:
    • The man that drew pixel art wire frame of the character was Shigeru Miyamoto using graph paper.
  • Sakurai said that Little Mac had the highest loss ratio out of any other fighter.
