Flower Fairy Lip (花の妖精リップ) is the protagonist of the Panel de Pon series from Intelligent Systems.
A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after her was made available as a part of the base game for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Character Description[]
Lip is a Flower Fairy hailing from Popples, a world inhabited by fairies that work to keep nature alive, as magic is needed to sustain it. Lip is a young and energetic girl that does not have full control of her powers yet, and thus requires the use of her wand. One day, several monsters led by the evil demon king Thanatos run amok the land, causing destruction. Thanatos then places a curse on the fairies, causing them to fight amongst each other; however, Lip is the only one to escape the curse, meaning it is up to her to free her friends and family with her magic powers and puzzle solving skills.
The game involves Lip traveling to eight different weather-based sections of Popples and dueling against the cursed fairy with the corresponding weather-based ability in a game, which involves matching blocks with the same color and sending them to the opponent's screen as Garbage Blocks, with the goal of filling their opponent's column to the top before it happens to the player's board; if Lip wins, the opposing fairy will be freed of the curse. After Lip manages to rescue her friends, they go and make their way to the demon's castle, battling Phoenix and Dragon before eventually facing off against Thanatos. The girls manage to prevail against the demon king, but suddenly, the goddess Cordelia appears in his place and challenges them directly. Lip and the fairies, however, manage to beat Cordelia and restore Popples to its natural state; it is then revealed that Cordelia is actually Lip's mother and the queen of the fairies, and that the monsters were actually illusions she created to test the girls if they were ready to take over as Popples' new rulers. The Queen then declares Lip to be her successor and the new queen, with the full support of the eight fairies.
Following Panel de Pon, Lip would fall into relative obscurity; the main reason for this is due to the game's release for the western audience, as it was altered to become Tetris Attack and replaced the characters and settings with Yoshi and elements from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Lip and the other fairies were planned to return for sequels developed for the Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy, but both games were cancelled and reworked into Pokémon Puzzle League and Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, respectively. What was intended to be Panel de Pon on the Nintendo 64 would later get repurposed as a new entry as a part of Nintendo Puzzle Collection, a Gamecube game exclusive to Japan. Though the new Panel de Pon brings back the fairies, they are considered to be different characters despite their visual and discriptive similarities; as such, Lip's counterpart in the game is Flower Fairy Furil. Lip herself, however, would later make minor cameos in Planet Puzzle League and the Puzzle League minigame in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, as well as in Captain Rainbow as one of the residents on Mimin Island, with her wish being wanting to become a great magician despite her pollen allergy. Lip wouldn't make her formal western appearance until Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and later on May 5, 2020 with the western release of Panel de Pon on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo Switch Online service.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
While Lip does not make a physical appearance, Melee introduces her wand as an item under the name Lip's Stick. It is a battering item that spreads magic dust; if an opponent is hit with it, a Flower will sprout on their head and cause gradual damage until the Flower falls off. Additionally, one of Kirby's Stone transformations is Lip's Garbage Block from Panel de Pon.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
The Lip's Stick item returns for Brawl, as does the Garbage Block for Kirby's Stone attack.
Music[]
A new arrangement of Lip's theme song is available in the game. It was composed by Masafumi Takada and can only be played on PictoChat.
Sticker[]
While there is no sticker of Lip, her counterpart Furil from Nintendo Puzzle Collection does, but is erroneously named Lip in non-Japanese releases of Brawl.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]
The Lip's Stick item returns once again, as does the Garbage Block for Kirby's Stone attack. "Lip's Theme" also returns, though this time can only be played on Wrecking Crew.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
The Lip's Stick item, Kirby's Garbage Block transformation, and "Lip's Theme" all return for Ultimate; in the case of the song, it can now be played on Summit, Duck Hunt, Hanenbow, Find Mii, Tomodachi Life, Living Room, Balloon Fight, PictoChat 2, Wrecking Crew, Pilotwings, Wuhu Island, and all Smash-original stages.
Mii Fighter Costume[]
A costume for the Mii Swordfighter modeled after Lip is available in the base game; the outfit is available by default but the wig must be purchased from the Shop and is available for 450G. The sword it uses is her wand.
Spirit[]
A Spirit of Lip is available in the base game. It is a Support Spirit under the Ace class. Her Spirit Battle uses a Mii Swordfighter wearing the Lip costume already equipped with the Lip's Stick, and is assisted by Jigglypuff who is meant to represent Watabou the Fluffy. The player will also have the Flower effect on at all times and only Lip's Stick will spawn. The stage is the Hazardless form of Garden of Hope (meant to resemble Popples) and the song is fittingly "Lip's Theme". Only the Mii Swordfighter must be defeated to win.

Trivia[]
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks Lip's formal debut to western audiences, not counting her secret unfinished stage in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge or her costume in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, as well as the character Furil as that is considered to be a different character altogether.
- In the original Smabura-Ken website, a fan asked Masahiro Sakurai if Lip would be able to join Smash in the future; he replied with an uncertainty of her recognizability, while also recommending players to try Panel de Pon as he was a fan of the game.
