Revision as of 23:19, 20 March 2019

This article is about Link's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For other uses, see Link.
Link has been redesigned to match his appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He can now pick up arrows he's fired, and his bombs have been upgraded to remote bombs, so you can set them off when the timing is just right!
—Description from the Super Smash Blog.

Link (リンク) is a veteran fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, first playable in Super Smash Bros. He was confirmed in the game's first teaser trailer in March of 2018.

Attributes

Strengths

  • Heavy weight gives him good survivability
  • Plethora of projectiles and long reach with sword give him lots of zoning and spacing options
  • Disjointed hitboxes on most attacks give him high priority
  • High launch power on many attacks
  • Hylian Shield blocks most enemy projectiles when standing idle, crouching, and walking
  • Possesses two meteor smashes: down tilt and down aerial
  • Arrows from Hero's Bow can now be picked up as items, making them more versatile in use
    • Increased damage and knockback from double arrows
  • Boomerang can be thrown at several angles and can be used as a zoning tool as well as a combo tool
  • Bombs are excellent tools for stage control, combos, zoning, camping, and edge-guarding, and can also assist Link in recovering

Weaknesses

  • Below average recovery, relies on bombs to effectively recover when at higher percentages
  • Bombs cannot be detonated when picked up by enemies, and the explosion can hurt Link if he is not careful
  • Considerable lag on most kill moves
  • High falling speed hinders recovery
  • Average run speed causes him to fall behind other characters

Summary

Changes from SSBWU/3DS

Attributes

  • Link's appearance is based off his appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when wearing the Champion's Tunic, with his classic appearance being an alternate costume.
    • This means now Link is right-handed, instead of left-handed like his predecessors.
  • Overall more range on sword attacks

Ground Attacks

  • Link received a new jab combo.
  • When at 0%, he can fire a projectile beam from his sword when using his forward smash.
  • Up tilt now starts from behind and ends in front

Aerial Attacks

  • Forward air's hits connect more reliably now.

Grabs and Throws

  • Link no longer uses the clawshot or hookshot for his grab; as such, he also no longer possesses a tether recovery.

Special Attacks

  • All of Link's Special Moves have their appearance updated to reflect its appearance in Breath of the Wild.
  • Link can pick up arrows that miss their targets; the next time the bow is used, it will then fire two arrows instead of one. Picked up arrows can also be thrown as items.
  • Link's Bombs can be detonated remotely; he is only able to have one bomb on the stage at a time, rather than two.
  • The Gale Boomerang has been replaced with an ordinary Boomerang.
  • Link has a new Final Smash that replaces Triforce Slash, in which Link uses the Ancient Bow to fire an Ancient Arrow in front of him in a similar fashion to Light Arrow.

Moveset

Ground Attacks

Normal

  • Neutral Attack: Link slashes the sword forwards, then a second time, and then finishes with a vertical swipe.
  • Forward Tilt: Link slashes broadly and strongly in front of him.
  • Up Tilt: Link does an overhead arcing slash.
  • Down Tilt: Link slashes his sword low to the ground.
  • Dash Attack: Link leaps forwards and then brings the sword down in a vertical strike until the blade impacts with the ground.

Smash Attacks

  • Forward Smash (Sword Slice/Double Sword Slice): Link powerfully swings the sword forth; if the attack button is pressed a second time, Link will do a second strong slash with stronger knockback than the first. At 0% damage, the first swing will fire out a spinning sword beam, specifically the one seen in Breath of the Wild.
  • Up Smash: Link slashes the sword overhead three times.
  • Down Smash: Link slashes low to the ground on one side, and then on the other.

Other attacks

  • Floor Attack (Front):
  • Floor Attack (Back):
  • Floor Attack (Trip):
  • Ledge Attack: Link stabs right in front of him after climbing the edge.

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral aerial: Link performs a sex kick.
  • Forward aerial: Link swings his sword in front of himself twice.
  • Back aerial: Link kicks backwards twice.
  • Up aerial (Jump Thrust): Link stabs the sword upwards.
  • Down aerial (Downward Thrust): Link stabs the sword downwards; spikes during the initial frames of the attack. When Link hits an opponent, he will bounce slightly upwards.

Grabs and Throws

  • Pummel: Link hits the opponent with the pommel of his sword.
  • Forward Throw: Link kicks the opponent forward.
  • Back Throw: Link kicks the opponent to his back.
  • Up Throw: Link throws the opponent upwards and then slashes at them.
  • Down Throw: Link throws opponent on the ground and body slams them.
