Kraid is a boss that appears in the Metroid series. Kraid is a massive, high-ranked Space Pirate with three eyes and the ability to generate and fire spikes from his stomach and fingers. He usually appears alongside Ridley.

Metroid

Kraid appeared as a boss in Metroid, where he was part of the mini-boss duo, the other being Ridley. In the game he is about Samus' height, and fires spikes from his belly. There is no special way to kill him. His height was due to limited capability of the NES.

Super Metroid

Kraid is much larger in Super Metroid than in the original game, being two screens tall and almost one wide. He is green, with a yellow belly and red eyes. His room is filled with spikes during the fight. In the first part of the fight, you can only see Kraid's upper body, and he attacks by throwing spikes from his fingers and to stabbing with his claw. To deal damage to him, the player must fire a Charged Shot, a Missile or a Super Missile at his eyes. He then will roar in pain, opening his mouth, which the player must shoot while open. He will often block shots with his claw, making it harder to damage him. After enough damage has been done to him, he will rise and destroy the ceiling, but leaving two platforms. He will then start to move back and forth in the room, now also shooting bigger spikes from three holes in his belly. After its defeat, the spikes on the floor will vanish, allowing Samus to enter the room in back, which contains the Varia Suit upgrade, required to access Norfair.

Metroid: Zero Mission

The fight is very similar to Super Metroid, but the second part has the player using the belly spikes as temporary platforms, instead of having two fixed ones. Kraid has an arguably better sprite and better animations, but sports the same look and has the same height as Super Metroid, indicating he did not grow between the events of Metroid and Super Metroid.

In SSBM

Kraid can be seen in the Brinstar Depths stage. He appears in the background rising from the acid every 15 seconds. After one big roar, he roars menacingly, and then slashes at the stage, which causes it to tilt. Since he is a background character, he cannot be hurt and can't hurt the player either. He also appears as a trophy. Kraid is much taller here than he is on any Metroid game.

In SSBB

Kraid appears as a sticker in SSBB. He raises head attacks by 33 and can be used by everyone. His artwork is from Metroid: Zero Mission

Trivia

  • On SSBM, his eyes are yellow rather than red.
