Kanto (カントー地方 Kantō-chihō?) is a fictional region that appears in the Pokémon universe. The Kanto region houses the original 151 Pokémon plus various other Pokémon in the future games, and is also where Ash and his friends venture through for the original Pokémon anime series, as well as in some story arcs in later seasons. The handheld games Pokémon Red & Blue, plus the update Pokémon Yellow, the Japan-only Pokémon Green (which became Blue in America), and the remakes Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen all take place in Kanto. In Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, and its own remakes, Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver, players may travel to Kanto after defeating the Elite Four in Johto.
The Kanto region has also played a part in the Super Smash Bros. series. All of the Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. and most of the Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl come from the Kanto region. Additionally, Pokémon-themed stages in the Super Smash Bros. series take place in Kanto. These stages are as follows: Saffron City (from Super Smash Bros.); Pokémon Stadium, Poké Floats (both from Super Smash Bros. Melee, although the latter is technically designated as being located in "Kanto Skies"); and Pokémon Stadium (from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although it is the Melee version).
It is named after the Kantō region in Japan, where the Tokyo Metropolitan Area is located.
