The Heart Container will always appear in the air and fall toward the ground, presumably to make obtaining the item a challenge for fighters.
In the original Super Smash Bros., the Heart Container will heal all the damage of the user, regardless if they are hit while healing. Inlatergames, the Heart Container will only heal 100% damage, and retain any damage inflicted while recovering damage (being hit by an attack dealing 10% while healing will result in the user starting with 10%).
The Heart Container also appears as the sole method of healing damage in All-Star Mode (and Boss Battle mode in Brawl), with three given in Meleeand Brawl (six if playing with another player in Brawl), and one initially and two after unlocking all characters in SSBWU/3DS(though the lack of more Heart Containers is compensated with the addition of a Maxim Tomato and Fairy Bottle). A single Heart Container will also be given to the player when Master Fortress is encountered in the Wii U version only.
Heart Containers drift toward the ground slowly and replenish 100 percentage points of health. In The Legend of Zelda, these items beefed up Link's life meter; in most cases, Link found them in the possession of bosses or hidden in secret areas. Heart Containers are often scattered across the land in several fragments.
Super Smash Bros.Brawl
The best recovery item! Grab this and heal 100 percentage points of damage. It falls slowly, so it's best to grab it in midair. Damage recovery won't happen instantly, though, so try not to get launched while your damage is counting down. In the Legend of Zelda series, Heart Containers raise the player's maximum health. Bosses always have one in their possession.

The Heart Container is an item that has appeared in all The Legend of Zeldatitles since the originalLegend of Zelda. This item allows Link to increase his heart capacity by one, essentially increasing his health. Heart containers would also replenish Link's health from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening onward.
The Heart Container's design in Super Smash Bros. and Melee is based off its appearance in Ocarina of Time, its design in Brawl is based off its appearance in Twilight Princess, and its design in SSBWU/3DS is based off its appearance in Skyward Sword.
