The Hammer (ハンマー Hanmā?) is Kirby's Side Special Move. Kirby swings the hammer he gains from his Hammer ability in the Kirby series.

Similar to King Dedede's Jet Hammer, Kirby is now able to hold the hammer to build power and move while doing it. However, charging it too much will start to cause damage to Kirby. Hammer Flip gives Kirby Super Armor when fully charged while in it's attack animation.

Custom Variations

Giant Hammer

One of the move's customizations is Giant Hammer, or Big Hammer in Japan (ビッグハンマー) . The move is a bigger, slower and stronger version of the Hammer, it can deal brutal damage.

Hammer Bash

The second Hammer's customization is Hammer Bash. If Kirby hits a opponent with it, it will send them upward. The move can't be charged, resembling the defaut Hammer in Melee and Brawl.

Hammer Kirby (Kirby Super Star)

Hammer is one of Kirby's many copied abilities from his various adventures. Kirby acguired this ability almost always from a gorilla-like miniboss called Bonkers. It is often one of the most powerful abilities. The hammer is almost identical in appearance to King Dedede's.

The attack Kirby's using with the Hammer is based on Hammer Flip from Kirby Super Star,[2] complete with fire-like aura bursting off when Kirby performs it in Brawl. Unlike in Kirby Super Star, Kirby doesn't swing it upwards, instead he swings swings the hammer horizontally on front.

The Double Hammer could be based on Hammer Swing from Kirby Super Star. Kirby wasn't able to use this move in the air in his games, though.[3]

Usually in the Kirby games, Kirby would swing the hammer vertically when using on the ground, but when Kirby would use it in the air, he would perform Giant Swing. This makes Kirby spin while holding the hammer out and twirling it around his body. In Melee, when Kirby uses the Hammer in the air, he would perform a weaker but quicker Ultra Giant Swing from Kirby Super Star. This, along with Hammer Flip, seem to refer at the simple controls of Hammer from Kirby's Adventure.[4]

Double Hammer

In Brawl, while being used in mid-air, Kirby spins twice instead of once, and the hammer appears to be set aflame, akin to one of Kirby's attacks as Hammer Kirby. He also gains horizontal distance using Hammer. Of the two mid-air swings, the first does mainly vertical knockback and the second has great horizontal knockback. This is particularly useful against bosses like Ridley, as it can stall his fall time, allowing him to use Double Hammer again for a total of four hits. This is capable of taking out up to a third of Master Hand's HP.

Trivia

  • In the E3 2006 movie of Brawl, Kirby was seen using the Hammer move in midair, using it in the same fashion as in Melee, so the attack must have been modified later in development.
  • In Smash 4, it is possible to perform a glitch that causes Kirby to be enveloped in flames. To perform it, the player must fully charge the Hammer and release it while being swallowed by other Kirby or King Dedede. If done correctly, Kirby will return covered in flames. The glitch will fade out if the player dies or uses Hammer again. It is a purely aesthetically glitch and doesn't affect gameplay.
