Green Hill Zone is the stage that represents Sonic the Hedgehog in the game. It is unlocked after Sonic himself is unlocked. The midsection is a half-pipe that crumbles away if it attacked too much during the course of the fight. There are also checkpoint lampposts that can be spun around to hurt other players once when they are blue. In the background is a giant shuttle loop, an icon of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Supporting Sonic characters Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Silver the Hedgehog can be seen making their cameo appearances as they run to get through the loop. The background also consists of various other parts of the Green Hill Zone.

The first stage in the first Sonic game, Green Hill Zone is as iconic to Sonic as World 1-1 is to Mario. Some variation of it appears in nearly every 2-D Sonic game. A full 3-D version of it appears as a secret unlockable in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle with a design not too different from that seen in Brawl.

The stage itself is generally a curve with breakable parts. These parts make the stage a hazard itself, but soon returns. To the far sides, there are flat parts, however.

Trivia

  • The checkpoint that appears in this level, will hurt players while touched when spinning, except for the person who hit the checkpoint and made it start spinning.
  • The characters in the background can be seen individually, in pairs, or all 3 at once.
  • On top of the shuttle loop is a Power Up TV. This object is essentially the equivalent of the Mario franchise's '?' Block. This particular TV has a picture of Sonic on it - in all Sonic games, this would give you an extra life, when using Tails or Knuckles his face will appear instead of Sonic`s *Interestingly, if the player pauses, zooms out and rotates the camera so its facing the left of the level, there is a version with a ring instead. In all the 2D Sonic games, they always gave 10 rings, but started giving different amounts in the 3D games.
  • The Pokémon Trainer appears on top of the loop.
