Prince Gilgamesh (ギルガメス), sometimes shortened to just Gil (ギル), is the protagonist of Bandai Namco's Babylonian Castle Saga series.

A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after his armor was made available as DLC for both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Character Description

Gilgamesh is the prince of Babylim, a small walled-off kingdom split in two by the Euphrates River. He is the son of King Marduk and best friend of the shrine maiden Ki. One day, the kingdom is invaded by the Sumer Empire, where Gil's father is killed and he is enslaved and forced to work on the construction of a tall tower. After its completion, the demon Druaga takes over the tower, the kingdom, and the Blue Crystal Rod - a divine relic provided by the god Anu to protect the people of Babylim. Unbeknownst to Gil, Ki is tasked by the goddess Ishtar to retrieve the Blue Crystal Rod, only to be captured by Druaga. After hearing what's happened to her, Gil is given blessed golden armor from the gods to save his best friend. After ascending the tower's 60 labyrinthine floors, retrieving multiple treasures, and gaining strength and power, Gil is able to slay the demon and rescue Ki while recovering the Blue Crystal Rod. Afterwards, two fight their way down the tower, now in ruins and overrun with out-of-control monsters, and successfully escape. They later travel distant lands to return the Rod to Ishtar in the heavens.

Three years later, Gil is now king and has married Ki. One day, a mysterious sorcerer calling herself Skulld arrives and kidnaps Ki. Gil attempts to rescue her, but is quickly overpowered and defeated. After recovering, he discovers the Chronos Orbs to be the source of her powers and goes to destroy it; he is successful, but Skulld disappears with Ki, and the only way to bring his wife back is with the Blue Crystal Orb. With guidance from Ishtar, Gil travels back in time and defeats Druaga again, retrieves the Orb, and manages to bring Ki back home while returning the Crystal back to Anu.

Sometime after, Gil receives the premonition of Druaga's revival, which will lead to the end of the world. To prevent this, Ishtar sends Gil to Aon, a metaphysical realm that exists in between heaven and earth. After rescuing Princess Inana and several inhabitants, as well as slaying several demons of Druaga's army and consulting with the mythical dragon Quox, they are tasked with reassembling the Rainbow Crystal Rod, a powerful relic that was split into seven smaller rods each with a different color. Eventually, the heroes find them all and initiate a ceremony to recombine the rods. They then travel to the demon castle Gal Aon Adem to face Druaga; during the battle, Gil briefly lost his courage, which in turn lost his protection from the gods, and consequently falls back to Babylim. Gil quickly heads to the Temple of Anu to pray to the god, to which Anu responds with having Gil battle a copy of himself. Gil passes Anu's test and races to the top of the Tower to return to Aon, where the heroes reunite and defeat Druaga once more.

Aesthetic

A Sprite of Gilgamesh from The Tower of Druaga has a chance of appearing in Pac-Man's "Namco Roulette" taunt, accompanied by the "Item Acquired" sound effect.

Mii Fighter Costume

A costume for the Mii Swordfighter modeled after Gil's Hyper Armor was made available as a part of the Wave 6 batch of DLC costumes. Its design is an amalgam of all of Gil's multiple designs from several games, but mostly resembles his appearance in Namco x Capcom.

The sword it uses is Excalibur. It is the ultimate and final sword Gil can typically find in the Babylonian Castle Saga. In both The Tower of Druaga and The Return of Ishtar, Gil can only obtain it if he has also found the Antidote and Balance items as well as the Dragon Slayer blade; if Gil hasn't acquired Balance, Excalibur will instead be swapped out for the Evil Sword. In The Tower of Druaga, it is found in the 45th floor, while in The Return of Ishtar it is in the 50th floor.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Mii Swordfighter costume modeled after Gil's Hyper Armor returns, this time as a part of the Round 7 batch of DLC costumes. Its design has been altered, now matching his appearance in The Return of Ishtar. Gil's sprite also returns in Pac-Man's "Namco Roulette" taunt, though now accompanied by the sound effect of his sword swings.

Trivia

• Gil's appearances in trailers make references to the Babylonian Castle Saga series:
  • In the "Mii Fighters Suit Up for Wave Six" trailer for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the Gil costume is seen taunting next to a green Charizard lying down; due to its color, Charizard is most likely meant to be analogous to the dragon Quox.
  • In the "Mii Fighter Costumes - Round 7" trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
    • Gil ascending the stairs on Dracula's Castle references the end goal of each floor in The Tower of Druaga.
    • The next scene features the Gil costume battling a yellow Marth and a green Ridley, both being analogous to the Hyper Knight and Quox, respectively.
    • The same scene also features the Gil costume picking up the Key from Pac-Man's Bonus Fruit; this references how Gil must locate a key in every level so he can ascend to the next level.
    • The still shot shows the Gil costume approaching a metal Kirby in his Stone form, referencing Druaga transforming Ki into a rock in The Tower of Druaga.
