A Generator is a recurring obstacle in single-player modes of the Super Smash Bros. series. They first appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and return in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Generators appear as dark purple portals roughly the size of Bowser. Their function is to produce enemies until being destroyed. Each Generator generates only one type of enemy. There is a set limit on the number of enemies on the screen at any given time, so if the player gets rid of one, the Generator spawns another.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Generators are encountered in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. Generators can spawn up to thirty enemies, and if the player can defeat them all, the Generator will simply stop spawning the enemy, but it will not disappear. Most commonly the Generator will create Mites or Bytans, but later in the game Floows, Primids, and even Fire or Metal Primids will be produced.

Unlike every other enemy in the game (including Jyks), there is no health bar display for a Generator. Because of this, there's no way to know how much of a beating it can take. This is mainly because they are treated as stage elements, not enemies.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]

Generators make a return in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, as enemies in Smash Run. They spawn Mites, but can uncommonly spawn other enemies, similarly to Bill Blasters. Generators disappear after a set time, and the player's character can earn stat boosts by defeating them before this occurs. Generators defeated sooner drop more stat boosts.

While Generators are one of the few enemies in Super Smash Bros. Brawl without a corresponding trophy, they received their own trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, like with the other enemies in Smash Run.

Trivia[]

  • The Generators were not officially named for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and were commonly called "Subspace Generators" upon the game's release. It wasn't until Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS that the Generators were given their official name.
