Flare Blitz (フレアドライブ Furea Doraibu?, named "Flare Drive") is Charizard's Side Special Move in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Charizard rushes forward with fire surrounding him, powerfully hitting anything unfortunate to be in Charizard's way. However, just like in the original games, this Fire-typed move gives recoil damage onto Charizard upon activating the move. Flare Blitz replaces Rock Smash as Charizard's Side Special Move, with Rock Smash becoming his Down Special.

Flare Blitz is a move that requires some patience; though fast and heavy in damage and launch, an opponent with good reaction time can easily dodge this move; the recoil damage of the move will put Charizard at high percentages quickly if used too much. Flare Blitz can combo out of up throw at low percentages if the opponent doesn't DI, air dodge, or jump out of it. Flare Blitz is good for horizontal recovery and as a kill move, but a player will need to wait for a golden opportunity before they use this move to hit an opponent. The move also possesses Super Armor.

Custom Variations

In Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, the move can be customized to Blast Burn or Dragon Rush.

Blast Burn

Blast Burn (ブラストバーン Burasuto Bān?) is a powerful charge move similar to Flare Blitz. The attack starts by charging in a blue aura and then slowly moving in the desired direction. This move will still do 6% damage to you, even if you don't hit an opponent. If you do manage to make contact with an opponent then there will be a powerful explosion which does 16% damage to Charizard and 28% to the opponent, a significant amount.

  • Does more damage

  • Barely goes any distance

Dragon Rush

Dragon Rush (ドラゴンダイブ Doragon Daibu?, called "Dragon Dive") has Charizard spin around towards an opponent, if an opponent is caught in the spin they will be damaged multiple times, and if they're at the tip when Charizard finishes, they can suffer some knockback. Does 2% damage on the first hit and 5% on the second. The move does no damage to Charizard.

  • Does no recoil damage
  • Hits multiple times

  • Goes less distance
