For fighter info, see Hero (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate).

The Hero (勇者) is a character class and the title given to the main protagonist of Square Enix's Dragon Quest franchise.

He joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the second fighter in Fighters Pass Volume 1 and is the third downloadable character overall.

Character Description[]

Typically, the Hero class is the most well-rounded and powerful vocation in the Dragon Quest series. They are usually a strong warrior capable of all types of offensive attacks such as sword fighting and spellcasting and being rewarded with the best equipment. However, becoming the Hero first requires the completion of smaller vocations, making them skilled in most if not all trades. As it is a vocation, it can technically be granted to any of the party members, but the term is more unanimously associated with the series' eleven playable protagonists.

In terms of naming conventions, Heroes have never been given a canon name. Instead, fans usually refer to them by their number; for example, the default playable Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is named Eleven by fans due to being the Hero of the eleventh Dragon Quest game. Some are also referred to by their titles, with Eleven sometimes being named The Luminary instead by both fans and in promotional material for Dragon Quest XI.

The Heroes[]

Dragon Quest[]

Scion of Erdrick

The Hero of the first Dragon Quest is known as the Scion of Erdrick, who is a simple but stoic silent protagonist.

Originally just a simple commoner, this Hero's journey is kicked off when King Lorik informs him that Princess Gwaelin has been captured by the Dragonlord, who has also shrouded Alefgard in eternal darkness. During his adventure, he finds a hidden ancient tablet in a secret cave that details the steps on how to defeat the Dragonlord and become a worthy successor of Erdrick. He soon finds the princess under the clutches of a Green Dragon, to which he defeats. He then ventures to Charlock Castle to confront and eventually kill the Dragonlord, freeing Alefgard from its reign of terror. Hailed a savior, the Hero marries Gwaelin and together travel into unknown lands to form his own kingdom.

In the alternate timeline of Dragon Quest Builders, the Hero is now a crazed villain who resides in a small fortress, believing himself to be the king of the world after allying himself with the Dragonlord.

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[]

Prince of Midenhall

The Hero is known as the Prince of Midenhall and is a direct descendant of the Scion of Erdrick. Much like the Scion, he is also a more simpler protagonist, so much so that he does not posses any magical abilities compared to other Heroes.

After the wizard Hargon launches a devastating attack on Moonbrooke Castle, the king sends the young Prince on a quest to stop him, joined by his cousins, the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke. During their journey, they come across the grandson of the Dragonlord, who tell them of The Five Sigils - five artifacts that can combine and assemble the Charm of Rubiss, a weapon that can stop Hargon. The trio eventually manage to reach Hargon's Castle and defeat him as well as the subsequent awakening of Malroth, the God of Destruction. After Malroth's demise, the Hero and his cousins restore peace amongst the kingdoms.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[]

Erdrick DQIII

Set many years prior to the first Dragon Quest, the Hero is initially known as the Legendary Hero, though he is more best known as Erdrick (however, most promotional material names him Arusu). It is also in this game where the player can choose the gender of the Hero for the first time.

The Hero is often depicted as a fabled warrior in the Dragon Quest universe for his bravery in defending Alefgard and its surrounding lands from both the Archfiend Baramos and the Master Archfiend Zoma, a noble quest he started on his sixteenth birthday per the request of the King of Aliahan. As a reward for his brave deeds, the Hero is bestowed the title of "Erdrick" by the king of the dark world (which would later become Alefgard from the first game), thus creating the lineage known as the "Descendants of Erdrick." As such, the title and equipment of Erdrick is passed down from Hero to Hero.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen []

DQ Solo

The Hero is often known by their default names, being Solo (for the male) and Sofia (for the female).

From birth, they were prophesized to be the one to defeat the Demons and restore peace to the world. To protect them from the outside world, the Hero is sent to a hidden village to be raised by foster parents until they are of age. Unfortunately, the now 18-year-old Hero is left alone after their parents are killed in a failed assassination attempt led by Psaro the Manslayer. They later meet the rest of the party members and embark on a quest to prevent Psaro's ascension to become the next Ruler of Evil. Along the way they collect the pieces needed to assemble the Zenithian Equipment, which they use to slay Psaro and his subordinates.

In an epilogue exclusive to the game's remakes, after the Hero and their party defeat Psaro, they go to visit the grave of Psaro's elf lover Rose and plan to revive her with Yggdrasil Flowers. Once she returns, they take her to Psaro where she convinces him to end his tirade. Shocked that humans were able to revive her and chose to reunite the couple, Psaro pledges himself to the Hero and their party and helps them defeat Rose's true killer, the evil demon Aamon.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[]

Abel-Madason

The Hero is given the title of Legendary Monster Tamer, though he is often named by fans either as Abel (the default name in the Japanese version) or Madason (as named by the Hero's father).

This Hero is notable for two different reasons; for one, he uniquely wields a staff as his signature weapon, though he can also still equip a traditional sword. Secondly, he initially is not the prophesied Legendary Hero from birth, but instead a young man who was sold into slavery alongside Prince Harry after the death of his father. Ten years later, both boys escape captivity, with the Hero running to the town of Mostroferrato. There, the kingdom's nobleman Rodrigo Briscoletti sends the Hero on a quest to retrieve a pair of magic rings - the Circle of Fire and the Circle of Water - as a test of his worthiness to marry the nobleman's daughter Nera; the Hero later fulfills the mission and marries Nera, and the newlywed couple soon travel back to his homeland of Gotha where he is crowned king. Sometime later, monsters kidnap them both and turn them to stone.

Eight years later, the Hero's twin son and daughter find and rescue him, and the two set out on a journey to find Nera and the Zenithian Equipment; during their quest, they discover that the son is the actual prophesized Hero. Eventually, the family rescue Nera and free her from the curse, but are informed that the Hero's mother is trapped in the dark world of Nadiria, where Grandmaster Nimzo awaits to challenge the Hero. The family travel to Mt. Zugzwang and defeat the evil god, but unfortunately the mother perishes during the battle. The family soon return to Gotha and celebrate their victory, while the Hero's parents happily watch over them from the afterlife.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[]

Prince of Somnia

The Hero is known as the Prince of Somnia, though fans often refer to him as Reck, derived from the Japanese name of his kingdom (Reidock).

A seemingly average boy with amnesia, this Hero discovers his role in a larger prophecy after awakening from a dream where he battles a Dread King in a parallel world. After waking up, he is tasked by the village elder with finding a crown for the annual Mountain Spirit festival, only to find the crownmaker hanging above a giant hole. Though he manages to save him, the Hero falls into the hole, discovering an entire realm below called the Phantom World where the residents can't see him; he eventually finds a magic well that takes him back to his homeworld. During the festival, he receives a premonition of a great evil that will destroy his world. By the instructions of the elder, he then embarks on an adventure through the kingdom of Somnia and the Dream World to battle the monsters and their leader Mortamor that threaten to enter his realm. Later in the game, while collecting pieces of the Zenithian Equipment, the Hero meets his Phantom World counterpart - at the real Somnia, the King and Queen confirm to him that he was the Prince the whole time and regains his memories after fusing with his parallel clone. Him and his party eventually band together and defeat the monster Mortamor and escape the collapsing Phantom World.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[]

Auster

The Hero has two region-exclusive default names; Auster in the English version (as well as in English promotional material) and Arus in the Japanese version. This Hero is much more younger and pluckier than his predecessors, though can be a bit of a doormat at times.

The game's events transpire when the Hero's father finds an ancient map of the world filled with multiple lands, as opposed to the current day which only had their small island of Estard. The Hero and his companions soon after get sent back in time to a time when the lost continents existed, finding them in crises that threaten their existence. The party take it upon themselves to help alleviate each continent's problems; when they are able to succeed, the continent reappears in the present. After their restoration of the world is complete, they set off to battle the Demon Lord Orgodemir, the one responsible for the continents' disappearance. After his first defeat, Orgodemir retreats to the present to seal the lands again, only to be beaten again by the Hero and his party with help from the Four Elemental Spirits.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[]

Guv DQVIII

The Hero is commonly referred to as Eight, but is also given the nickname "Guv" by one of his companions, Yangus.

This Hero is an amnesiac who works as the captain of the guard of Trodain Castle and is accompanied by Munchie, a mouse who lives inside his pocket. After the villainous court jester Dhoulmagus sets a curse on all of Trodain by turning the residents into plant-like statues, the Hero and his companions (all of which are unaffected) set out to defeat him. However, when they do manage to defeat Dhoulmagus, the curse is not lifted; it is then revealed that the true instigator is the Lord of Darkness, Rhapthorne, who's soul is possessing people to kill the heirs of the seven sages in the hopes of unsealing himself. The Hero and his party set off on a journey to defend the remaining descendants, but ultimately fail, while Rhapthorne's soul keeps moving from vessel to vessel. Eventually, they manage to expose and release his soul, allowing them to directly fight and defeat the Dark Lord once and for all with help from the goddess Empyrea.

In the game's alternate ending, it is revealed that the Hero is part Dragovian on his mother's side, a maiden who fell in love with a human boy, being the lost prince of Argonia. The maiden's father disapproved of the relationship and took her back to the Dragovian homeland, where the Prince died trying to reach her. Days later, the Hero was born but was exiled to the human world as his mother died during childbirth. Regretful of his actions, the maiden's father went with his grandson, disguising himself as Munchie. In the present, the Hero is rightfully married to Princess Medea in a wedding ceremony.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[]

DQ Nine

The Hero is simply referred to as Nine, and the gender can be chosen.

This Hero is a member of a race of angelic guardian deities known as the Celestrians who work to watch over the human world known as the Protectorate and tend to the Yggdrasil tree by feeding it "benevolessence", the spiritual energy of mortals; if the tree is fed enough benevolessence, it will produce fruits called Fyggs that summon the Starlight Express train to take a Celestrian to the Realm of the Almighty. One day, after a supernatural force strikes the train, the Hero finds themselves falling to a human village called Angel Falls and becoming a mortal human. The Hero then goes on an adventure to recover the train and its engineer and recollect the scattered Fyggs.

After rescuing the engineer Stella, the Hero discovers that the Fyggs can grant a human's wishes, but will drive them to insanity. The Hero also periodically encounters the Gittish Empire, a revived evil syndicate. The Hero's steward, Aquila, appears to be aiding the Empire by stealing the Fyggs, but is later revealed to be a double agent and was actually returning them to the Celestrians' Observatory. Later, the Hero goes to rescue to Celestrian Corvus; however, fueled by a seeming betrayal from the Gittish Empire and his former human lover, Corvus uses his power to attack the Realm of the Almighty and vows to destroy both humans and Celestrials. The Hero pursues him to the now corrupted Realm of the Mighty and turns them both into mortals with a Fygg, allowing Corvus to be defeated and his spirit ascending to the restored Realm with his lover. In the epilogue, the Hero finds another Fygg, turning himself back into a Celestrian and finally travelling on the Starlight Express once again with Stella.

Dragon Quest X[]

DQ X

The Hero is simply referred to as X, and the gender can be chosen.

This Hero lives in a small village called Etene with their sibling, which gets attacked one day by Nelgel, the Lord of Hell. The Hero gets notably killed in the attack, but their soul is taken into a shrine and placed inside the body of a member of one of the five non-human tribes, while the sibling is accidentally sent back 60 years into the past as the Hero unknowingly casts a time-travel spell. As the game is an MMO, the story is told through several expansions; in the first expansion, under the guidance of a sage, the Hero must find a way to penetrate Nelgel's defenses and have a chance of defeating him. After time-traveling 500 years into the past and reuniting with their original soul, the Hero manages to acquire the Ark of the Heavens, allowing him to prevail over the Lord.

In the second expansion, the Hero travels to Rendashia to break Nelgel's seal, which can hopefully wipe him out for good. In the third expansion, the Hero must help stop a monster invasion while getting caught in the midst of a royal power struggle between Astoltia and Nagaland. In the fourth expansion, the Hero and a creature named Kyururu must prevent a dark future by stopping the commander of a new monster army. In the fifth and final expansion, the Hero must prevent a full scale civil war brewing in the Demon Realm.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age []

Luminary DQXI

The Hero is commonly referred to as either Eleven or The Luminary.

On this Hero's sixteenth birthday, he participates in a coming-of-age ceremony where he learns his true destiny; he is a reincarnation of a legendary warrior named Erdwin, who was adopted after his birth kingdom was destroyed, and is prophesied to defeat the darkness. He is then sent to meet King Carnelian of Heliodo, but is sent to the dungeons after the king mistakes him for an evil being. There he meets Erik, a thief that was sent to find The Luminary; the duo eventually escape and later meet the Keepers Veronica and her sister Serena, who join the party to help the Hero reach Yggdrasil and acquire the fabled Sword of Light, the Luminary's destined weapon. However, the Hero and his party run into the evil sorcerer Mordegon, who subdues the group and destroys the Yggdrasil tree, plunging the world into darkness. The party escapes as the Yggdrasil tree collapses, with Veronica sacrificing herself to ensure their safety. Later, the Hero forges his own Sword of Light and defeats Mordegon, restoring Yggdrasil and the world.

Sometime after. the party discovers time travel, intending to use it to prevent the death of Veronica and Yggdrasil's corruption. With help from the Timekeeper, the Hero travels back to the moments before Mordegon reached Yggdrasil and successfully defeat him. However, with the sorcerer gone, no one destroys Erdwin's Lantern, allowing a dark spirit to merge with it and awaken The Dark One, Calasmos - an evil entity that was sealed in the Lantern by the Timekeeper, revealed to be the widowed lover of the previous Luminary, Serenica. The party bands together and defeats Calasmos; afterwards, the Hero entrusts his mark to Serenica, who uses it to return to her normal self and time travel back to her beloved. The Hero, Veronica, and Serena later return the Sword of Light to Yggdrasil; the tree then reveals itself to be the legendary creature Yggdragon, having turned into a tree by Calasmos. It bestows the Luminary the title of Erdrick and keeps the sword for future heroes.

In an after-credits scene, the game is shown to have been a told as a storybook by a mother to his son, whom she awakens from his sleep. It is then revealed to be the beginning of Dragon Quest III, making Erdrick a descendant of the Luminary.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Hero SSBU

Fighter[]

The Hero was announced to be included in Ultimate at the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct on June 11th, 2019, confirming them to be the second fighter in Fighters Pass Volume 1.

Much like the Koopalings and Alph, the Hero is represented by four of the series' protagonists:

While the Heroes can attack mainly with their swords, they also have access to over 30 different kinds of spells. Their Final Smash has them call upon the seven other non-playable Heroes to assist in Gigaslash.

He was released on July 30th, 2019, alongside the stage Yggdrasil's Altar, 8 music tracks, and a Dragon Quest-themed Spirit Board as a part of Challenger Pack 2.

Mii Fighter Costume[]

Mii Erdrick Equipment

A costume for the Mii Swordfighter modeled after the Erdrick Equipment, as it appears in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, was made available as a part of the Round 2 batch of DLC costumes.

The sword it uses is the Sword of Kings. It is a legendary blade first wielded by Erdrick, which eventually got passed down to the Scion of Erdrick and later the Prince of Midenhall. It was said to have taken Zoma three years to completely forge the blade in the events prior to Dragon Quest III. To restore its strength, the player must locate a piece of Orichalcum and have it taken to a blacksmith of godly skill. It is paired with the Shield of Heroes (seen on the costume's left arm), a legendary shield found in the Nail Mark north by northwest of Tantengel castle. Both the sword and the shield, along with the Auroral Armour and Ortega's Helmet, make up the Erdrick Equipment.

The seven other non-playable Heroes (the Scion of Erdrick, the Prince of Midenhall, Abel/Madason, the Prince of Somnia, Auster/Arus, Nine, and X) appear to assist the playable Hero to perform the Final Smash Gigaslash together.

Spirits[]

A Fighter Spirit of the Luminary can be obtained after beating his Classic Mode route. Spirits of Erdrick, Solo, and Eight can be purchased from the Shop for 300G after downloading Challenger Pack 2. As they are Fighter Spirits, they do not have their own Spirit Battles and cannot be used.

Trivia[]

  • Following the Hero's inclusion, the two companies that merged to form the modern Square Enix company have now been fully represented in Smash, as Final Fantasy came from Squaresoft and Dragon Quest came from Enix.
  • According to one of Masahiro Sakurai's bi-weekly columns in Famitsu magazine, Square Enix has restrictions on which Heroes can encounter and battle against each other. However, Ultimate was given special exemption as to allow the Heroes to be palette swaps.
  • In an interview with series creator Yuji Horii, the team considered Slime to be the Dragon Quest representative but realized its limited moveset potential. The Hero from Dragon Quest V was also considered to be part of the selectable Heroes but scrapped due to his default weapon being a staff.
    • According to Sakurai, though he preferred the Hero to be the one to represent Dragon Quest, he would not have opposed to inclusion of Slime if Square Enix requested it.
  • Hero and the Pokémon Trainer are the only characters to be given a generic descriptor name as opposed to their optional default names.
    • As opposed to the Pokémon Trainer's names, Red and Leaf, being recognized as canon, three of the names of the playable Heroes are not canon and are instead popular names given by the fans; Eleven and Arusu are more used by Japanese fans (which is why Sakurai names them as such in the presentation) while The Luminary and Erdrick are more used by English fans. The latter two are instead recognized as their titles by Japanese fans.
      • Solo is the only name out of the four Heroes to be acknowledged as canon outside of the Dragon Quest series.
  • Ultimate marks the first time Erdrick, Solo, and Eight have voice actors. This was meant to accompany The Luminary having gained his own voice actress in Dragon Quest XI S, as they were initially developed to be silent fighters. During the presentation, Sakurai shares an interesting tidbit about each actor:
    • The Luminary's voice actress, Mitsuki Saiga, was directed to have more energy in her vocals to better fit the style of Smash Bros.
      • While The Luminary has an English voice actor, being Rasmus Hardiker, he is voiced in all regions by Mitsuki Saiga. This makes him one of four characters to be voiced in all regions by the Japanese voice actor despite having an established English voice actor, the other three being Mewtwo, Cloud, and Sephiroth.
        • Much like Mewtwo, the Heroes have additional voice clips exclusive to the Japanese version of Ultimate. In their case, it is them calling out the names of their spells.
    • Erdrick's voice actor, Nobuyuki Hiyama, has previously voiced the adult Hero of Time in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the first Super Smash Bros., and Melee; due to his experience with Smash, his recording session was the fastest to complete. Sakurai also notes that his performance can be recognized as Guy Shishioh from The King of Braves GaoGaiGar.
    • Solo's voice actor, Takeshi Kusao, requested he be given a lot of detail on the backstory of this Hero to help improve his performance.
    • Eight's voice actor, Yūki Kaji, apparently dreamed of doing voice work for Dragon Quest and Smash and he was enthusiastic to fulfill both at the same time in Ultimate.
  • The Luminary is the first fighter to debut on both a Nintendo console and a non-Nintendo console, as Dragon Quest XI debuted on the Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation 4.
    • The Luminary is the first third-party character to originate from a handheld console.
  • The inclusion of Eight being one of the selectable Heroes was in part due to requests from the series' Western fans.
  • Eight is the first third-party fighter to originate from a sixth-generation console, as Dragon Quest VIII was initially released on the PlayStation 2.
  • Kirby's Copy Hat after inhaling Hero has him wearing Erdwin's Coronet, a headpiece that can be worn by The Luminary in Dragon Quest XI.
  • Coincidentally, each Hero comes from a different decade; Erdrick debuted in 1988, Solo debuted in 1990, Eight debuted in 2004, and The Luminary debuted in 2017.
    • The Luminary is the second third-party character to be created in the 2010's, following Joker.
