Slimes (スライム) are recurring common enemies in Square Enix's Dragon Quest franchise, as well as being its mascot.

A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after a Slime was made available as DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They also make a cameo appearance in the background of Yggdrasil's Altar, which is a part of Fighters Pass Volume 2.

Character Description[]

Slimes are a race of creatures with a squishy body that resembles a water droplet. According to series creator Yuji Horii, they were originally meant to be more unappealing and ugly with a much more moldy appearance akin to other RPG monsters; however, artist Akira Toriyama decided to go against the trope as he felt he should make Slimes more endearing.

Much like Goombas in the Super Mario series, Slimes are the first enemies the Hero encounters in the Dragon Quest series. They are the weakest enemies in the series as they lack any real offensive abilities and are easily defeated in a single strike. More recent titles have given certain Slimes personality and their own language, which consist of slime-related puns such as "gooman" or saying "slurp" or "goo" as a verbal tic. Some have also become travel companions for Heroes, with them being known as Friendly Slimes.

Due to their simplistic design and increased popularity, multiple Slime variations have appeared throughout the series, eventually forming the Slime family. These have included She-Slime, Liquid Metal Slime, Healslime, and King Slime. Their popularity has also earned them dedicated spin-off titles such as Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, as well as playable appearances in other games like Itadaki Street and Mario Sports Mix.

Slime Family[]

  • Introduced in Dragon Quest:
    • She-slimes - Female Slimes with an orange-colored body and are slightly stronger than their male counterpart. Their orange body is said to be the cause of either a genetic mutation or the result of a carnivorous diet.
    • Metal Slimes - A Slime made of metal that is infamously rare to find and hard to beat, due to its tendency to run away during battle. If one manages to defeat any variation of a Metal Slime, they will be rewarded with an incredibly high amount of XP, some being higher than certain bosses.
  • Introduced in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line:
    • Bubble Slimes - A green Slime in the form of a puddle. It can inflict the Poison ailment onto characters.
    • Healslime - A tentacled Slime resembling a jellyfish. They are mediocre at fighting and instead focus more on healing other enemies it's grouped with. There also exists a Cureslime, which is a much more powerful Healslime with a red body capable of fully healing the enemy party, and Man o' War, an aquatic variation that can't heal but can cause paralysis.
    • Liquid Metal Slimes - A metal variation of a Bubble Slime, rumoured to be made out of Orichalcum. Its presence can be hinted at by any nearby Hunter Mechs.
  • Seaslime - Introduced in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. A Slime found in the sea wearing a Shellmet. They have high defense and easily resistant to elemental spells. A Seaslime more commonly found on land named the Shell Slime also exists with a green body and brown Shellmet.
Seaslime
  • Introduced in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen:
    • Amalgoomated Slime / Agoomulator / Slimification / 1:8 Slime - A group of Slimes that can band together to attack the party before merging into a King Slime.
    • Curie / Guru Curu - A Cureslime NPC that the player meets at Canalot's church during the night, healing the town's sick residents. It only appears in the PlayStation and Nintendo DS versions, and later returns in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation as an optional party member.
    • King Slime - A large Slime adorning a crown on its head. It is the result of several normal Slimes fusing together. A green variation called King Cureslime can also occur if several Cureslimes fuse together. There is also a metal variant named the Metal King Slime that can only be encountered near the end of the game.
    • Medislime - A Healslime variation with mediocre healing abilities, but make up for it with its large physical strength.
  • Slime Knight - Introduced in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Dwarven knights using green Slimes as their steeds. A stronger variant involves a knight mounting a much weaker Metal Slime.
Slime Knight
  • Introduced in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation:
    • Goober - A young Slime training in combat at Slimopolis. He enters the tournament in the hopes of beating the reigning champion Hammer; if he does, the tournament organizer Sledge allows the player to invite Goober into the party hoping that it will further his training.
    • Goowain - A wandering Slime Knight that appears in the game's Nintendo DS remake. He is found in Howcastle and is looking for a lord to serve under. He can be recruited after the player has acquired the town's Magic Key. He is named after Sir Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur and a knight of the Round Table in Arthurian legend.
    • Kingsley - A King Slime in the DS remake obsessed with high fashion, so much so that he will only ally with someone he deems stylish. He can be recruited if the player and the party have a monster score a 260 or above in the Château de Sass' Best-Dressed Contest.
    • Mercury - A Liquid Metal Slime in the DS remake that is found in Suite Dreams. After the player has logged 20 dreams with 20 other players in the Insomnopaedia, a hidden area will appear in the house that leads to a forest where Mercury is hiding in. The player must try to catch him in order for him to join the party.
    • Mottle Slime - Much like a regular Slime, but chunkier with a yellow body and black spots. There is also a blue Mottle She-Slime and a green Mottle Mendslime. A special Mottle Slime named Spot also appears in the DS remakes; he is found in Castle Graceskull, where he begs to join the party out of fear of the boss Nokturnus.
    • Shelley - A Seaslime in the DS remake that is repeatedly found to be unlucky in meeting up with her friend Curie. She is rather self-deprecating with low self-esteem, but will cheer up if the player has her join the party (but only if Curie has also been recruited).
  • Introduced in Dragon Quest Monsters:
    • Box Slime - A red Slime that supposedly spent a long time in a box, changing its shape.
    • Cyber Slime - A metallic gray Slime with cybernetic enhancements, capable of fighting with electric-based attacks.

They are a group of humanoid monsters wearing armor that represents a particular member of the Slime family; Red represents the She-Slime, Blue for Wild Slime, Green for Shell Slime, Yellow for Drake Slime, Black for Cyber Slime, Pink for Angel Slime, Purple for Metal Kaiser Slime, Orange for Mottle Slime, and Brown for Rubble Slime. Their overall concept and designs are possibly inspired by the tokusatsu franchises Super Sentai and Power Rangers.

    • Slabbit - A pink Slime with rabbit-like hind legs. As such, it is one of the fastest members of the Slime family.
    • Spot King Slime / Mottle King Slime - Much like other King Slimes, it is the result of multiple Mottle Slimes fusing together, though interestingly it also gains dog ears.
    • Tree Slime / Buddy Slime - A Slime with a flower sprouting from its head, much like Pikmin.
    • Wild Slime - A Slime with webbed claws and yellow hair.
    • Wing Slime - Tentacled green Slimes with large wings on their backs.

    • Metal Dragon Slime - A metal Drake Slime that is capable of healing itself but has a much lower defense compared to other Metal Slimes.
    • Platinum King Jewel - A metal variation of the Gem Slime that grants the player the highest amount of XP in the game - even moreso than the Metal King Slime. It is the hardest enemy to defeat in the game, as it can cast Dazzle to ensure the Hero and their party can never even hit it.

    • Angel Slime - A pink Slime with angel wings and a halo. They are said to be reincarnated as saints and live very religious lives.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Mii Slime

Mii Fighter Costume[]

Headgear for the Mii Fighters modeled after a Slime was made available as a part of the Round 2 batch of DLC costumes. It uniquely has wobble and jiggle physics.

Spirit[]

DLC Spirits of a Slime, King Slime, and a Liquid Metal Slime were added into the game as a part of the DLC Spirit Board in Hero's Challenger Pack.

The standard Slime is a Grab Spirit under the Novice class. Its Spirit Battle uses a blue 5-man Kirby Team, as both have squishy bodies. It is a Stamina match and all Kirby opponents will only perform Neutral Aerial Attacks, a reference to a Slime's basic attack being a jump-based strike. Once the Kirby Team has been disposed of, a lone giant Kirby will appear, who is meant to be a stand-in for King Slime. The stage is the Battlefield Form of Gaur Plain, meant to resemble the grassy areas that Slimes often inhabit, with the song "Fighting Spirits - DRAGON QUEST III" playing in the background. All opponents must be defeated to win. If the Spirit is maxed out to Level 99, it will be enhanced into King Slime, a Primary Grab Spirit under the Ace class.

The Liquid Metal Slime is a Support Spirit under the Advanced class. Its Spirit Battle also uses a blue Kirby, though is now fittingly Metal. He is equipped with a Franklin Badge, a reference to its resistance to magic spells, and has super armor. It is also a Stamina match, though only lasts for 30 seconds, which is meant to mimic its tendency to flee from the player when spotted. The stage is the Battlefield Form of The Great Cave Offensive, as Liquid Metal Slimes are commonly found in caves, with the song "Battle for the Glory - DRAGON QUEST IV" playing in the background.

No. Spirit Name Artwork Origin Type Rating Effect Slots / Cost (Support)
1330 Slime Spirit Slime (Dragon Quest) Dragon Quest Grab Spirit Enhanceable 1
1331 King Slime Spirit King Slime Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS) Grab Spirit ★★★ Weight ↑ ↑ 2
1336 Liquid Metal Slime Spirit Liquid Metal Slime Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line (Mobile) Support Spirit ★★ Move Speed ↑ 1

Aesthetic[]

Both a Slime and, more rarely, a Liquid Metal Slime have a chance of appearing in the background of Yggdrasil's Altar at anytime during a match.

A Slime also appears as a part of Hero's Down Taunt and in one of his victory screens. Solo, the Hero from Dragon Quest IV, wears a Slime earring, which turns into a Metal Slime in his alternate palette swap.

Other[]

Two Slimes make a cameo appearance in the Heroes' reveal trailer. In it, they are briefly seen reacting to The Luminary being launched and then fleeing.

Fighter[]

According to both Masahiro Sakurai and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, the development team briefly considered Slime to be the chosen fighter to represent the series, but had to be scrapped after realizing its limited moveset potential. Though Sakurai preferred the Hero, he has stated he would not have opposed Slime being chosen instead if Square Enix had requested it.

Trivia[]

  • Slime's appearance in Smash marks the third time it has appeared alongside Mario and Final Fantasy characters, following the Itadaki Street series and Mario Sports Mix.
  • Slime's segment of the "Mii Fighter Costumes - Round 2" trailer make several references to the Dragon Quest series:
    • Captain Falcon performs one of his Taunts at the Mii Gunner, which involves performing a beckoning gesture. This is a possible reference to Dragon Quest V, where monsters can join the Hero's party after defeating them.
    • The Mii Gunner is later seen, now in Metal and running away from The Luminary; it is a reference to Liquid Metal Slimes and their tendency to run away. The Luminary is also seen performing Hatchet Man, which is often used to defeat Metal Slimes as it has a high chance of dealing a critical hit.
  • The Slime hat is one of eleven headgear pieces to have special physics, following the Inkling Squid hat, the Viridi wig, and Lloyd wig (all three only in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U), the Zero helmet, the Knuckles hat, the Veronica wig, the Erdrick Equipment helmet, the Martial Artists wigs, the Nakoruru wig, the Rabbids hat, and the Callie wig.
