Dunban (ダンバン, Danban) is the tritagonist of the first Xenoblade Chronicles, created by Monolith Soft.

A Mii Fighter Costume modeled after him was made available as DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which later returned for the base game of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He also makes an appearance in Shulk's Final Smash, Chain Attack.

Character Description[]

Dunban is depicted as the most level-headed and rational person in Shulk's party, acting as the group's voice of reason. He is a mentor and advisor to the team, often encouraging and motivating them in their beliefs. He is also a good-hearted warrior, as he is always risking his life to protect others above all else. Dunban is very protective of his family and friends, especially his younger sister Fiora as he is her only biological family member remaining, with her safety and well-being his biggest concerns. However, in an effort to keep up his inspiring and motivational personality, its eventually revealed that he cries when no one is around and hates it if that fact is found out by anyone else.

Dunban is a high-ranking soldier of Colony 9 and is originally thought to be the only one that can wield the Monado. He wields the blade in the Battle of Sword Valley, where he leads the troops in warding off Mechon invaders. However, the Monado takes a toll on him and it eventually injures his right arm, rendering it paralyzed. One year later, Dunban's arm is not fully healed and is forced to accept the fact that he can no longer use the Monado anymore when the Mechon invade Colony 9 again; instead, he uses his still functioning left hand to fight with a katana known as the Homs Sabre, while the Monado is passed on to its true wielder, being Shulk. He initially stays behind at Colony 9 when Shulk and Reyn set off in their journey to defeat the Mechon to avenger Fiora's apparent death, but suddenly arrives at their side to defend them after Metal Face narrowly kills the boys and Sharla. He and his friend Dickson join the party from here on out.

Later in the game, Dunban faces off against Metal Face on Prison Island, who refers to him by name; during the fight, he notices Metal Face perform moves he recognizes. After Shulk unlocks the Monado II, he uses it to break Face Nemesis' armor, revealing that an alive and amnesiac Fiora is in control of it. On Valak Mountain, Dunban meets Metal Face yet again, who reveals himself as his old comrade Mumkhar, confirming his suspicions. Dunban swears to destroy Mumkhar after its revealed that it was him who led the recent Mechon attack on Colony 9 and "killed" Fiora. In their final confrontation at Galahad Fortress, the party manage to prevail against Metal Face, but Shulk convinces Dunban not to kill him; however, Metal Face dies anyway after firing a laser beam that breaks a pillar, causing it to topple over him all the way down into the Fallen Arm. The party later gets separated after the fortress' destruction, leaving Shulk with Mecha-Fiora; during their time alone, he manages to recover her memories and learn that another body was controlling her. When the party reunites, Dunban is overcome with emotion upon seeing his sister again, alive and remembering. Together, they assist Shulk and the rest of the party to kill Zanza.

In the aftermath, Dunban is seen in the new world wished by Shulk talking with the Mechonis, now living with the Bionis in peace and harmony while Fiora is restored back into a Homs.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

The Mii Fighter Costume modeled after Dunban returns, though this time is a part of the base game and can be purchased from the in-game Shop; the wig is available for 450G and the Outfit is 650G. Dunban also returns as a part of Shulk's Chain Attack alongside Riki and the newly added Mecha-Fiora.

Spirit[]

A Spirit of Dunban is available in the base game. It is a Primary Shield Spirit under the Ace class. His Spirit Battle uses a Mii Swordfighter dressed in the Dunban costume and is assisted by Shulk in a white palette swap, a dual reference to both Dunban being a mentor to Shulk and the color resembling Mecha-Fiora. Both characters' weapons have increased power and have a chance of getting a Sudden Final Smash, due to Dunban himself being in Chain Attack. The stage is Gaur Plain and the song that plays is "You Will Know Our Names". To win, only the Mii Swordfighter has to be defeated.
