DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was confirmed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct on November 1st, 2018. The DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available to purchase on the Nintendo eShop.
Bundles
- Fighters Pass was released on November 1st, 2018 which includes DLC fighters #71 to #75, alongside their stages and music when available, all for a discount. It also gives Mii Swordfighter Rex costume as a bonus of purchasing the pass. It costs $24.99 to buy.
- Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was first made available for pre-purchase on January 28th, 2020 which will include DLC fighters #76 to #81, alongside their stages and music when available, all for a discount. It will also give the Mii Swordfighter Ancient Soldier costume as a bonus of purchasing the pass. It costs $28.99 to buy.
Challenger Packs
There are a total of 11 Challenger Packs. Each pack will include a fighter, a stage, and additional music tracks and spirits, and will cost $5.99 each to buy.
- Challenger Pack #1 includes the DLC character, Joker, as well as the stage Mementos, music from the Persona series, and spirits from Persona 5. A Persona 5 themed spirit board is also included.
- Challenger Pack #2 includes the DLC character, Hero, as well as the stage Yggdrasil's Altar, music, and spirits from the Dragon Quest series. A Dragon Quest XI themed spirit board is also included.
- Challenger Pack #3 includes the DLC character, Banjo & Kazooie, as well as the stage Spiral Mountain, music, and spirits from the Banjo-Kazooie series. A Banjo-Kazooie themed spirit board is also included.
- Challenger Pack #4 includes the DLC character, Terry Bogard, as well as the stage King of Fighters Stadium, music, and spirits from the Fatal Fury series. An SNK themed spirit board is also included.
- Challenger Pack #5 includes the DLC character, Byleth, as well as the stage Garreg Mach Monastery, music, and spirits from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. A Fire Emblem: Three Houses themed spirit board is also included.
- Challenger Pack #6 includes the DLC character, Min Min, as well as the stage Spring Stadium, music and new spirits from ARMS. An ARMS themed spirit board is also included.

Piranha Plant
Piranha Plant is a downloadable character that can be downloaded for free (for a limited time) by buying and registering Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on My Nintendo before January 31st, 2019. It later got available as paid DLC for $4.99 on February 1st, 2019.
Joker
Joker, the main protagonist of Persona 5, is a downloadable character that was released on April 17th, 2019, as part of the Challenger Pack #1 bundle.
Hero
Hero, the protagonist from the Dragon Quest series is a downloadable character that was released on July 30th, 2019, as part of the Challenger Pack #2 bundle.
Banjo & Kazooie
Banjo and Kazooie, from the Rare franchise of the same name, is a downloadable character that was released on September 4th, 2019, as part of the Challenger Pack #3 bundle.
Terry Bogard
Terry Bogard, from the arcade fighter series, Fatal Fury, is a downloadable character that was released on November 6th, 2019, as part of the Challenger Pack #4 bundle.
Byleth
Byleth, the protagonist from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, is a downloadable character that was released on January 28th, 2020, as part of the Challenger Pack #5 bundle.
Min Min
Min Min, hailing from ARMS, is a downloadable character that will be released sometime around June 29th, 2020, as part of the Challenger Pack #6 bundle.
Mii Costumes
Additional Mii costumes will be available for $0.75 each, with the exception of Rex outfit and the Ancient Soldier outfit, which is only available as a bonus with the Fighters Pass and Fighters Pass Volume 2 respectively.
Fighters Pass bonus
This Mii costume is only obtainable as a bonus by pre-purchasing the Fighters Pass. The costume was released on December 7th, 2018.

Round 4
The fifth wave of costumes was released on November 6th, 2019. This contained 1 new costume from the Samurai Shodown series, 1 new costume from the Art of Fighting series, 1 new costume from the King of Fighters series, and 2 returning costumes from the Virtua Fighter series that were in Smash 4.
Round 5
The fifth wave of costumes were released on January 28th, 2020. This will contain 1 new costume from Altaïr, 1 costume from the Raving Rabbids series, 2 more returning costumes from the Mega Man series that were in Smash 4, and 1 new costume from Cuphead.
*Cuphead outfit also comes with a music track, Floral Fury.
Round 6
The sixth wave of costumes will be released on June 29th, 2019. This contained 1 new costume from the ARMS, 1 returning costume from the Tekken series that was in Smash 4, 2 new costumes from Splatoon, and 1 new costume from the Fallout series.

Modes
These modes were added for free on April 17th, 2019.
- Stage Builder allows the player to create custom stages.
- Video Editor let players edit their videos with transition effects, text and music.
- Shared Content let players share and discover custom stages, Mii fighters, and videos. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for sharing and downloading community-made content.
These modes were added for free on July 30th, 2019.
- World of Light mode now has a Very Easy difficulty option.
- Spectate Mode let players spectate other players' matches and predict the winner to earn points, which can be used to buy items from a special Vault Shop.
- Online Tourney mode lets players participate in in-game online tournaments with preset rules that change periodically. Special event tourneys are planned to be held too. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play online tourneys.
These modes were added for free on September 4th, 2019.
- Home-Run Contest returns again, allowing players to rack up damage on a sandbag and launch it as far as possible, either with themselves or with another player.
These modes will be added for free on June 29th, 2019.
- Players can now replay matches of Spirits that are present in their Spirit Collection, with a dedicated score system for it.
